Sorry I haven't been here in a long time. Here is the scoop on DS 5, the final word is he has traits of Aspergers's but not enough to warrant a diagnosis. I'm very much on the fence whether I agree or not, I go back and forth. He recieves OT and has sensory issues but he expresses them differently than some kids. He internalizes his sensory reactions. For example when he gets glue on his fingers, he goes into a shell, he gets a blank look in his eyes and fixates on his fingers picking at the glue. There is no talking to him until, he's told to go wash his hands, then he runs to the bathroom, with the relief showing on his face.
When we are out and a stranger talks to him or even someone we know slightly, he hides his face and waits for the floor to swallow him up. He wont look, talk or acknowledge the person. Also he is in a blended special ed pre K. He loves, loves, loves it. He is thriving there, he has friends, he adores his teachers. Yet, when he first goes in the mornings, he gets the blank look, roams around, lost looking. It takes him awhile to settle in and be himself, even there where he loves it and it's familiar.
Could this be anxiety? Is it just part of the asperger's? Anyone else's kid do this?
The weird thing is he has such fluctuation in his personality. When DS is at home, at school once he's warmed up, or with people he's comfortable with, he's very extroverted. He talks INCESSANTLY. He's a complete clown, he's loud. The range in his personality is just hard to understand.
This sounds exactly like my daughter. I have no diagnosis and I have always known she was different and exceptional. We had OT when she was very small for sensory issues. She does ALL of the things you mentioned that your son does. I could have written this myself. My daughter DOES have anxiety issues too. She has had anxiety attacks that I have witnessed as well. What did the dr tell you about your son? They wont diagnose but they say he has it? I havent had my daughter tested yet because she is crazy anxiety ridden about doctors or anything different as it is. I dont want to traumatize her more. Im worried what they have to do to diagnose.
