Autism?

Hello. My name is Jessica and I am a working mom of 3 boys. Raymond is 8 and has ADHD, Devon is 6 and has ADD, and Caiden is 2.

Raymond's 1st grade teacher (he's in 2nd now) mentioned once that he might possibly have some form of high functioning autism because some of his behaviors. We thought maybe, but havent really thought about it until the other day. Just the other day my mom was listening to an interview with a very smart 13 yr old autism boy and when she heard some of his behaviors, it was like a light bulb went off because my son has some of the same things.

My son is very smart (not quite like that little boy though). He has no problems in school. He does take methylphenidate for his ADHD. When he isn't on his medicine, he's very impulsive, as in he will hit, kick, throw things, etc not to be mean though, he just does it without thinking. With learning, you tell him once how to do a math problem, the spelling of a word, etc, he's got it. He's very observant. When he was younger, he would line up his blocks or other toys according to color. He likes his matchboxes in a certain parking lot lineup when he is playing with them and hates if his brothers come in and mess up them. He cannot and has no interest in riding a bike, can't tie his shoes. He has a major fear of trees, leaves, sticks, etc. When he is hugged, he usually doesn't really hug back a lot. He has a great memory. If we go to a restaraunt for example, he'll say I've been here before, remember me and so and so came here, I think it was on a Sunday, etc. He also took a very long time to potty train. He's in speech therapy because when he was younger, he pretty much made up his own language (much better now). And when he gets nervous sometimes has some minor little ticks.

Those are some main things I can think of right now. Does it sound like autism, normal, or maybe part of his ADHD? I have an IEP meeting with his speach teacher Monday, should I bring it up to her?

Please any input is appreciated.

I would definitely ask his speech teacher, maybe even the school psycologist.  A lot of those traits can indicate autism, maybe aspergers syndrome.

My son has a lot of the same traits you mentioned, and he was diagnosed with autism a year ago, high-functioning also.

I think it is autism, those behaviors remind me of my son who is three now and was diagnosed with PDD.  You need the right diagnose for your son.

My son has somes similiar traits. He is awaiting detailed testing for autism. We've already done an extensive intake appt. & been working with his doctor & other professionals to diagnose him. Document your concerns thoroughly & collect observations from othets as well. Then sprak to ur doctor and others to get a thouogh diagnose. Best of luck 2 you.

It sounds like some form of autism.  My son who is 3.5 has high functioning PPD and some of your son's symptoms are similer to my son's; knows math/read some words now, hitting, lines up his toys, some fears, sensitive to some noises, he is the controler on when I can hug him, my son is still potty training too.  Have your son diagnosed by a psychologist.
