I am new to this group & I have joined because I don't know what else to do or where to turn. I have a 9yr old son that has ADHD, ODD & possibly bipolar. He is so out of control, he does not listen to me at all & he has started stealing really bad lately. I got 2 calls from his teacher because he is stealing from her, he steals stuff around the house EVERYDAY. He steals food like, milk, raw eggs, sugar, peanut butter, nutella, cheese, cereal & juice. He steals my underwear, pictures, books. He steals from the other kids & I am at a loss. This morning I woke up at 7am & peeked in his door to see if he was sleeping & he had my thongs on......WTF & he also had an old cell phone of mine & a power cord ( all these were taken from my closet ). His room is TRASHED so bad you can't see the floor. All he does is tear up paper. I have been telling him for 2 weeks to clean it & it just gets worse & worse. Someone please help me. Oh & also he has very bad sleep habits lately he sleeps for 2 hours & is up ALL NIGHT LONG.
First thing is to get him on some sleep meds. Clonidine is what my kids take. When the brain get less rest it gets the kids more messy, uncontrollable, and violent. Get sleep somewhat regulated for 2 months before giving an additional med. Psychiatrist can prescribe.
He has a psychiatrist & he is on clonidine 3x's a day, melatonin at night, adderall xr 30mg in the morning & adderall tab 10mg in the afternoon

Not saying it is true with your son, but with my kids the melatonin does NOT help them sleep. The adderall only increased the behaviors. The oldest kid went through nearly everything and the best thing we found that works is Zyprexa. Which would be better than Lithium. See about ending the melatonin, only have clonidine 30 minutes before desired bedtime, and get off Adderall.
He has been on just about every ADHD med there is. I did stop the melatonin before & he stayed up ALL night long. Actually the past 3 days he didn't get his melatonin ( It was at the pharmacy ) There was 2 nights when he did not sleep except for 2hrs ( he fell asleep at 10pm woke up at 12am & stayed up. I believe he is bipolar ( he has not been diagnosed as of yet ) So I think since he isn't being treated for it things will not change no matter what meds he is on. He goes back to his psychiatrist on Dec 1

My daughter is 11 and is bipolar. She used to steal too and I still have no clue why. She needs nothing. She would also con kids out of their stuff like candy and toys etc. And everyone just follows what she says like shes a queen - its nuts! its hard to say why he's taking things and he may not even know. Sometimes its just an OCD thing and they can't help it. Have you talked to the pdoc and what have they said about it?
My son does this too. I have talked to his doc & she hasn't really said anything about it. I believe he is bipolar as well ( his father his adhd & bipolar ) I have woken up at 6am & actually caught him COOKING pancakes. I am pretty sure it is only a matter of time before his doctor admits him for a complete evaluation.

i hate when it deletes what i'm saying.
what i was going to say was that if you're talking about his doctor as just his primary doctor - hes got to go to a psychiatrist. if they arent addressing him stealing and cooking in the middle of the night find a psychiatrist who does. what hes doing is called impulsivity and its a big red flag for bipolar kids. they dont think far enough down the line about consequence so for things a normal kid would say - i'd love a chocolate cake but i dont know how cook one i better not do it, the bipolar kids say I'M MAKING CAKE. with out thinking they could burn themselves or the house or that they just arent allowed.
and with kids like this there is no remember what you told them. i used to think that my daughter was just really a ditz (isnt that horrible) because i would tell her dont jump off the couch. she'd run off. 5 minutes later shes crying because she jumped and hit her head on the coffee table. i'm like - did you NOT HEAR ME TELL YOU DONT DO THAT YOU'LL GET HURT? and she'd look at me like I WAS THE ONE having the problem. We've known she had this issue since birth its just taken a lot of time tracking down what the problem is and even trying to chip away at addressing it.
so find a psychiatrist. please write me if you want to talk
He does have a psychiatrist. I have told her before that I believe he is bipolar like his dad & she said it could take a couple of years to diagnose him with Bipolar. Right now she says he has severe ADHD & it is not under control ( no really lol ) So that is what she is focused on. She is thinking about admitting him to be evaluated.

sounds like my son.he's 5 yrs and steals and has what the emergency clinic calls an unhealthy fasination with fire.he also never listens toa thing i say,and continally argues.he also has major anger issues.he also had the same sleeping habits as ur son until i took him to the pediatrician and they put him on a mild sleeping med. he's also hungry all the freaking time too. everyone says couseling but unfortunatly i can't get him in till feb and they told me this in sept.so i'm forced to find alternative means of dealing with him.latley the only thing that seems is keeping him busy.wearing him out seems to be the only thing that keeps him from getting into too much trouble, but we still have meltdowns as i've come to name them, but there less then they were.have u thought of getting him evalutated by a shrink to see what his diagnosis is?or if he has any coping skills u could try with ur son?and then there's if he has something they can treat with medication to help him
He has a counselor & a shrink he sees regularly I am at a loss here. He has been on just about every med. The next step is inpatient evaluation.
