Overall, the episode was decent, although I had a slight problem with....

The way that pagans were portrayed. Human sacrifice is not something that pagans were known for, and I hate that perception.
Other than that, the impromptu caroling was cute, and I was glad to see a return of the young actor that played Dean in an earlier episode.
There was a continuity problem in this episode, however. In the pilot ep, Sam said that John gave him a gun when he was young, so that he could protect himself from the monsters in his closet. In this episode, where he's older, he supposedly doesn't know that John is a demon hunter?

WHEN YOU HAVE A SHOW LIKE SUPERNATURAL WHAT KIND OF CHRISTMAS EPISODE DID YOU EXPECT?IT LIVED UP TO IT NAME AND I LIKED IT THROUGHLY.THE COUPLE WAS A HOOT ,KINDA A OZZY AND HARRIET TYPE BY DAY ,BLOOD THRISTY PAGANS BY NIGHT.THE DIRECTOR OF THIS SHOW HAS TO BE ONE SICK DUDE BECAUSE OF WHAT HE CAN COME UP WITH.
ALSO I LOVED THE BOYS RENDENTION OF "SILENT NIGHT" I LAUGHED MY BUTT OFF!THAT WILL BE STUCK IN MY MIND FOR AWHILE.
ALSO I LIKE THE WAY THEY ARE BREAKING DOWN DEAN'S TOUGH GUY IMAGE BY SHOWING THAT HE IS SCARED TO LIVE SAMMY BEHIND.I LIKE THE MOMENTS WHEN THEY ACTUALLY GET TO TALK.WHEN I REALIZE THE STORY BEHIND DEAN'S NECKLACE I ALMOST CRIED,I THOUGHT MAYBE HIS DAD HAD GIVEN IT TO HIM NOT SAM.

I agree. I taped it and only saw about 75% of it (was busy off and on getting the little one ready for bed during the beginning of it). But what I did see was still good.
Liked Sam telling Dean about the true origin of Christmas from Pagan Winter Solstice - didn't like them trying to say all Pagans performed human sacrifices (I'm sure there might have been some culture during the Roman times - don't forget seems religions before Christianity seem to be considered Pagan).
Loved the flashbacks with the brothers when they were kids - those actors hit the grown up versions on the nail (at least I thought so). Nice to see the reason behind that necklace.
Loved the Ozzy and Harriet/ancient gods couple. Just seemed such an oxymoron when you thought about it.
My two fav bits (in practically the same scene):
"We learned to - what's that word honey?"
"Assimilate"
"Yes, assimilate. That's it."
and...
"If you fudging touch me one more fudging time I'm gonna kick your fudging ass."
I apologize if I didn't quote those two exact - but I"m sure you get the point...

Quoting goddessofmetal:I agree with most of what you said especially the fave quotes. I love th ending the best though i did not like that they seemed to just be seating when the camera faded. They should have put their feet up to watch the game and laughed or something. It looked they just said "that's a wrap" and they were stuck with nothing to do kind of weird.

This episode abolsutely broke me. I sat through the whole last part of it with silent tears rolling down my face.
Did anyone notice that the gift Sam gave Dean as a kid is the amulet he always wears? The one he got angry at the skinwalker for stealing in season one? For 2 1/2 seasons, we've wondered what that amulet meant. Even if we never understand WHY Sam chose that particular pendant, the fact that Dean wears it every day as an adult is huge.
