School started here Thursday and I am wondering if I am overreacting or maybe not reacting enough. I know school has been in session for two days but shouldn't my son who is in Special Ed classes along with regular classes have already had time in his spec ed class? I know he hasn't been in there yet. I asked him when he came home from school on Thursday and he said no and the same thing yesterday. This school has had a problem in the past keeping a spec ed teacher. Plus he doesn't have a homeroom teacher yet. They are looking for one to hire, apparently they didn't know they were going to need another teacher.
The more time I spend with this school the more I feel they are inept to have children in their school. Last year my son's class last year didn't have any heat and the teacher had to buy electric heaters to heat the room. The school felt it was more important to buy a new sign for outside that made the school look more sophisticated.
Plus they lost him one day for 15-20 mins in kindergarten. He's in second grade this year.
Hi,
You should have a copy of his IEP at home, that specifies how much he is pulled out for spec.ed. If they are not doing what they are required to do, you have a right to request a meeting to discuss it. They should at least have a long-term sub for consistency's sake until they hire another teacher. If your child has trouble with transitions, you could request that he be put in a different homeroom where he'd have the same teacher all year.
If ANYTHING happens like losing him (I
d be up at the school demanding to know what safeguards are in place so that did not happen again to him or anyone else!) or not following his IEP, etc, then you can request a meeting at the school. If you get nowhere, usually there is a parent resource center in counties that serves as a resource for parents whose children are in special ed. I would work with the school, the PRC if there is one where you live, the county, and possibly the school board---it depends on how your school/county is set up.
Oh wow, I know how you are feeling bout the school system cuz my daughter tht is now 12 yrs old is going thru the samething. The school wont even call me nor talk wit me but for a few teachers. My daughter's classes are so crazy & locked down. she feels at times like an inmate locked up in prison. I didnt get even a behavioral plan that was promised along with her IEP. Last year the principal called her a "Mental Case" & brought this other school in without telling no one to have my daughter tested but only made things worst. I am trying to get her into another school cuz I want her to feel better about herself but more than to learn something without being judged. Please let me know if I can help you as well. sorry tht it took me so long to read your post.
