Hi
My son is slightly ADHD and takes 18mg of Concerta he is 13 yrs old.   I only give it to him on school days because he is very mild and only needs it to concentrate for schoolwork.   I have an X who is trying to take placement and is the using what one doctor told him against me.   This doctor told him he believes in giving the medication 7 days a week.   I have two other family doctors who believe that if the child is manageable without on weekends and holidays and summer then don’t give it.   What I am looking for is people who believe like I do who would be willing to write a short note about their experience with Concerta and their child to back me up in court.   I know I am not the only one who doesn’t need to drug their kid 24/7.  And please don’t take this wrong there are a lot of kids who are more extreme than my kid and may need it.  Contact me if you would like to help.   Thanks

My son is not on that medicine becuase he is 4. But a friend of mine had her son on this medicine. Only gave him the medicine during school as well. But now he doesnot take it and that was her choice.

My daughter is 8 and she hasn't been put on med.'s yet but she to would only need to to concentrate in school.  Her doctor just isn't convinced she needs it for that yet.  Her teachers think it will help a lot so we are still going back and forth but I totally agree with you.  I mean seriously what do they need to sit and concentrate on during the weekends.  Unless they have it really bad which for both our kids they don't.  It all depends on the child.

I'm sorry but as a nurse for 17 years, you really aren't doing your son any good, because ok you give it to him 5 days a week then is off for the weekend by the time Monday comes around all meds are out of his system and it will take 2 to 3 days to get back in his system on a level stand, you're better off putting him on the lowest dose possible 7 days a week or try taking him off completely and keeping him on a strict structred schedule.  I'm surprised his Dr. is going along with just medicating him during the week during the school year.  Sorry didn't want to hurt your feelings but am concerned for your son you could be causing more harm than good.  Good Luck in court.

I just recently found a new psychiatrist for my 6 year old.  (He couldn't stand the first one.)  Anyway, she is a strong believer in only medicating during the week whenever possible.  As she says, the meds curb appetite so much, it's important for them to at least have a strong appetite on the weekends.  Yes, it takes a few days each week to get back to full effectiveness.  However, if they are doing fine on Monday, having been unmedicated all weekend, then it's fine.
In fact, I would suggest that you talk to his teachers.  If they feel that he is doing just fine on Monday, having been unmedicated all weekend, maybe they could write something for you.  (I'd hurry though, since shool's almost out!)
We really don't spend much time with our kids once they are in school, so the teachers are the best source of information.
One other thing.  If you do get those notes from the teachers, take a copy to the doctor that your ex spoke to.  Maybe you could sway him a bit.  (New decision based on new information.)
Just a thought.
Good luck!

Concerta does not need to build up in the system It works for the day only.
