  • Explain to your child what drugs are.
  • Tell him/her what they do to you
  • Tell him/her what will happen if they get caught.

Really just see who his/her friends are and see what their families are like if you suspect them to be into drugs then I wouldn't allow him/her to hang with that friend anymore.

One thing I think you always need to tell your child is, THAT NO MATTER WHAT THEY HAVE DONE OR THINKING ABOUT DOING...THAT THEY CAN ALWAYS COME TO YOU AND TALK, AND THAT YOU WILL ALWAYS COME AND PICK THEM UP IF NECESSARY!!

Talk to them often - it shouldn't be "one" conversatin, but many of them that change in content as they get older.

Keep an eye on them - where they're going, who they're hanging with.

Stay involved.  Don't think that just b/c they're teens that you need to loosen the reigns - not at all!  They need you and they need your guidance!

I agree with sckeen - friends can be such a big influence in a kids life, so it's important to get to know your kid's friends and make sure they're giving the right sort of influence.  And open conversation (about drugs and everything else going on in their lives) is also so important.

Be straight -up nosy! " I will be your friend later in life, til then I am here to protect you"  Things along those lines............

Parents need to educate themselves...kids get drug education in school, we don't. Keep kids involved in productive activities and know their friends. Be there to talk. Realize that drug use/abuse can happen in any family.

*Lead by example.

You can't expect your children to stay away from things that you don't.

I agree as well, my parents were very GREAt about this! I am doing this too! Call us paranoid but we do background checks On EVERYONE that comes in contact w// our children AND we are VERY involved with EVERYTHING our children do. And for right now since they are so young they don't go anywhere w/out one or both of us present!we'd rather be safe than sorry!
