Hello!

Just a quick "hey" to let you know who I am, what I'm about, and how I'd like to see this group go.

I'm Sister Marilyn (though in the gaming world I go by MANY names, and, ironically that's not one of them.)  I'm an unusual, middle-aged mom living in the Bible belt (and hating it), and looking for some entertainment that doesn't cost me an arm and a leg.  Enter GAMING!

I've always loved geeks and nerds, having been one myself for most of my life.  I was a paper D&D dork during high school and still play to this day.  I first began my nerdy career when I stumbled upon the Dragonlance series of books.  This gave me an interest in D&D, and I took off from there.

I played Wolfenstein and Escape from Hell in high school.  My first console game was Atari's Asteroids.  I beta tested Star Wars Galaxies (I hate it since the updates- cancelled my subscription.  I don't like the career changes.)  I also beta tested World of Warcraft (wasn't thrilled with that, either.)  My fave by far is Guild Wars:  I don't feel guilty for not playing it, because there's no monthly fee!

I love gaming because it's something to do without spending a lot of money.  For my family, computer and console gaming isn't any different from board game night (which we do, too.)  For a family with a small entertainment budget, gaming is the way to go.  We currently have four computers networked in our home so we can play games together.

Despite being an avid gamer and the kind of ecletic mom that's open-minded, I'm still pretty strict on what my sons play.  I think being a gamer gives us (my husband and I) advantages because we know what the games are about, whether or not they're too violent, whether they are appropriate for our sons and, in most cases, we've actually played them before the boys get a chance.  I go by what I feel my sons can handle, using the ratings as a GUIDE, not a RULE.

I hate the argument that gaming produces violent kids.  I recall many hours of shooting ducks on my Atari, but have no desire to hunt or kill animals.  People who blame gaming for violence are looking for a way to excuse poor parenting.

However, I'm open to debate on that!  Which brings me to DA RULZ.

I don't mind disagreements, as long as they are civil.  Name calling is the sign of a small mind without a solid argument.  If a debate comes down to name calling, then, in my opinion, the debate is over.  When you have nothing left to say, and no way to defend your opinion but to name call, personal attack, or bring up the "Spelling Issue", then your done.

I believe in the Three Strikes and You're Out rule everywhere else, so I guess it's only fair to use it here.  If I have to warn someone more than three times, consider yourself removed.  And I will document it.  And I'm good at documentation...I've been in business a long time.  So, please, don't test me.

Just a general FYI/Reminder:  Please be careful in sharing too much personal information with someone.  You never know who you're really talking to on the other end of these internet boxes, so be careful when giving out Real Life info.

Thanks for stopping in;  I hope you'll join my little group.  If you have questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to message me!

ENJOY YOURSELVES!!!

Thanks much for the welcome. Its been AGES but I am a devout RQ player. No offense but D&D was too complicated. I have a character I have had since I was 18 or so(thats how me and hubby met actually---15 years ago). I have a twelve year old son who has been playing since he was six. We ran out of people to play with when I graduated college (Class'03) and now the dice are not happy :) I am trying to open a videogame shop to replace the one that left town in January but I have no cash to get started :( Anyway, let's break out the two ten sided and get rolling. It's good to hear from you!

A gaming shop would be a dream job!  Actually, my dream job would be to write stores/modules for Wizards of the Coast.  Unfortunately that's one of those things that I think would be like trying to break into music or movies.  I just am not in the right place for it!

My 11 year old son plays D&D with us.  I think it's a great tool to teach kids with.  Have you ever watched the Dead Alewives bit about D&D?

Hi Illiana!  Welcome.  This group is just getting started, so posts are few and far between, since there's only four of us.  But I'd love to hear about your D&D campaign:  do you play Dragonlance, or any of the popular campaigns, or do you make up your own?  Things like that.  Let us know!

We mostly play Forgotten Realms setting making up our own games.  I've never tried using one of the premade adventure campaigns. I don't really play alot since we recently moved (in feb) and don't know many gamers here. I'm moving back home in July so hopefully will get more into it again. I've only ever ran one game and it ended pretty quickly since we had a hard time corridinating schedules with other players..

Right now my dh is running an Exalted game for me but it doesn't happen very often.

oh and i've never played dragonlance before.

I've never played Dragonlance either...LOL... I just know it's a pretty popular one.  My husband and I have considered the Forgotten Realms campaign...but we went off on a tangent with building our own world (I posted some stuff about it under the Valcress thread.)

Well, welcome to the board.  Where are you moving to?  We're also making a move, and we're going to lose half our gamers when we do.  We'll have to find other people to hook up with.

Hi

I'm new here :) One of my names is Aerica, though I go by others online :).
I play mostly console games like Nintendo, PS and Xbox. I do love to play the Sims on my PC though. I have two girls (8 and 4)who love to play too. I think I'm just a big kid so gaming is just one of my fav hobbies. I'm in school now to get my degree in Web Design. I can't wait to take my animation for gaming class. I also make beaded jewelry.
For some reason I can't seem to part with my video game systems even if I don't play them as much. So far we have two NES, 2 SNES (one belongs to my oldest), a N64, a Gamecube, a pink SP (my oldests), a pink DS, a Wii, a Playstation, a PS2 slim, and an Xbox. My grandfather still has a working Atari...the one with the paddles. My little brother still has a Sega Dreamcast, I think a Sega Saturn, a PSP, a 360 and a Wii. I recently got him hooked on the Sims2 so he has that on his Mac. He is so addicted that once he came over for a visit he brought his mac with him....and it's the big 24 inch screen one LOL.

Welcome Aerica!

It's funny, you mention those old game systems:  we're having a moving sale, and I put in the pile for sale a Dreamcast and a Ninetendo...one of the old gray ones....I don't even know what they were called.

I LOVE the Sims2.  I haven't played in awhile, because I can't afford Seasons right now...I want it SOOO Bad...!!

Whenever my brothers or any of our friends come over they bring their computers and we have a LAN party.

This one will be a long one!

I started playing D&D with my brothers and friends when I was 14. I kept playing throughout my high school and early 20's. After I got divorced (my ex was the dm), I only played on and off with other groups of friends but it was never quite the same.

Some friends introduced me to a % based system called Harnworld. The DM is really good with intrigue and roleplays a lot more than I have experienced in past D&D games. The battle system is a little complex and I don't enjoy it as much as I enjoyed D&D's battle systems, but its good enough. I like the fact that there are no levels, no cookie cutter classes- anyone can do anything as long as they practice it enough to get good at it. Its a point based system rather than level. Its relatively magic-low and magic users keep their identities hidden lest they get caught and burned as a witch. I love D&D more, but the storyline the DM has going has pulled me in.

I also play computer MMORPG's. I played Ultima Online for the last 7 years and still playing. I play on the Pacific shard under the name GwendlynFiremane. I've been a long time participant in my guild The Ancient Order of Elves. Recently, I've been playing World of Warcraft (because my boyfriend does). I beta tested Lord of the Rings Online, but its too bland looking for me. I guess I'm too used to the bright cartoony colors in WoW. My home will always be in UO though. I love my guild.

I used to work as an assistant manager at a video game store called Game Crazy. I played a lot of console games while working there (part of my job to research the games I was selling so I could make referrals). My relationship with console games goes all the way back to my brother's Atari. I collect the older systems and I also play ps2 and gamecube. My favs are anything Zelda, Guitar Hero 1 & 2.

"Wow....what a ride!!"
