Question About Weaning Puppies..[New Update In Green]

Update # 2:

Okay so, I've been weaning the puppies,
And they've been doing good.
Well last night, they spent the night away from the mom,
Just to see how they would deal, they did pretty good.
I fed them every 3 to 4 hours.
Other than the weaning, i haven't force anything on them.
But Last night, I saw one of the puppies eating dry dog food.
And this morning, one was drinking water.
And both times I had just put down, fresh warm food with milk, and milk alone..

AND Today, was the seperation day.
And we called the owner to see when he would be coming to get her.
To tell him, if he wasn't going to take her today, we aren't just leaving her.
Cause what can he do if we skip town?
I did worry he would come take her while we were still in town.

Well, he told my hubby that he would try getting her saturday, or sunday.
That he wasn't sure, cause his wife JUST gave birth.

So I told my husband to call him back and use that to our advantage.
My DH calls back and tells him, You know, we could keep her with us.
That way she can stay with the puppies, and he didn't have to worry about
making unnecessary drives to go get her.
And we won't worry that she'll be left...

He went for it.
Sounds bad, but I think god was filling that prayer
And they had their baby to deter their attention.

embarrassed I thought all the stress would kill the holidays for me.

Thank you mommies for the help!

UPDATE:

So I fed the puppies some of the replacement milk and solid food[which i let soak].
They were all over it.
The mom was in and out of the room.
She would leave, after she would get annoyed that I wouldn't let her eat it.
She gets aggressive toward the puppies around food.
[What I saw happen was a couple days ago she walked over to the bowl of food and started eating, dragging  2 puppies out of the box, well they followed her, and started trying to nurse and the other was sniffing around and she hoovered over her bowl growling and showing teeth, then one puppy moved and she started snapping. and I don't know if she got it, cause it happened while i was climbing over the gate, all I heard was the snapping and growling and a puppy yelping. I took her food away. and put it at the back of her cage where the puppies can't climb into.]
She tried doing that with this.

The solid food wasn't soft all the way through, so I just let it soak awhile longer
[don't have a blender, hubby broke it, but that's a long story for another time lol!]
But they all actually took a couple pieces and gnawed on it, lol

Or changing them to replacement milk..

Is it alright to do that when they are going to be taken away from mom at 3 days short of 5 weeks...

I read if you try weaning to pure puppy food, it could send them into shock and kill them from the drop in their sugar.

Okay, Long story short..
The landlord moved, we moved in..
One thing the landlord didn't take was his DOG!
He left her here. no fenced in yard, right next to a high traffic road.
Oh and did I mention she's not fixed!

He never told us that, and this little dog had great dane mixes dragging her off like a piece of meat.
The second day that she was in heat, I nearly get my leg taken off by all the male dogs!

We call the landlord and tell him
"HEY, YOUR dog is in heat"
He says"Oh well, we forgot to get her fixed, i guess we'll see in a month or so if she's preggo."

WTF!?!

Well Needless to say, we have her in our laundry room with the puppies.
WE buy her food. we ake them to the vet!

We went on thanksgiving vacation, to my dad's and took her and the week old puppies with us.
The landlord was calling frantically leaving us messages to leave her and the week old puppies outside in heavy thunderstorms and 30 degree weather. that when they had the chance [a couple days later] they would go check on her.

Yeah, NO! We don't want dead frozen or drowned puppies.
Not to mention the wild cats and dogs that still run through our yard!

Well, we just took her, and "didn't hear our phones".

Now he's calling saying he's coming to take his dog, cause we're not taking her with us.
The puppies will be 3 days short of 5 weeks old when he seperates them.
He told us to wean them to puppy food by next week..
that he did it before, and the puppies we fine....

4 week old puppies purely on dry puppy food.?!
Is that heard of?

You need to do whatever you can to stop him!!!!!! He can't do that! They need they're mother. If need be, get them a bottle and some formula, but please try to keep them together!

If you have to wean them, start now.  Combine the same food you are feeding the mother with puppy milk replacer in a blender (it should be a wet mush) and start giving 3 - 4 meals per day.  Do this asap as you want the mother present when you start them on a new diet.

Eventually, you will slowly decrease the milk replacer over the next 2 - 3 weeks until they are eating solid food.  Also have water available for them.

Your landlord sounds like a complete moron.  If it was anyone else, I would be calling animal control to file a complaint.

You will have highs when you ride the top of the wave and move forward and lows when the wave crashes over you and sucks you back. As you are riding a low wave of sadness, frustration & disappointment, just keep in mind the next wave will take you back up and move you forward once more.

He's set on taking his dog.
He said the puppies won't die, blah blah blah.

He doesn't give 2 s**ts about that dog.
She's more attached to me than she is the landlord.
You can tell whose taken care of her more..

They want to just see the fun side of having a dog, not the responsibility side.
I'm kinda angry, cause my MIL and Step mom were going to help me raise and save
money to get her fixed, once the puppies were weaned by the 6 to 9 weeks i researched.
And just say idk what happened, cause we couldn't be handling this every 6 months.

And I'm kind of wondering if he does that to the puppies so she'll for sure go into heat.
So he can make profit off the puppies.

And YES HE IS A MORON!
If he wasn't our  landlord, I'd def would of gotten the dog a home by now.

Oh btw, Idk if I'm a safe freak or he just doesn't care or it's normal...

He said he docks  the puppies tails himself.
[not sure what or how details, just that he does it himself]

And no, we took them to a vet to have it done. before we told him the puppies were even born...

And thank you for the advice, on the food.
I have looked into getting puppy milk, and a couple of bottles,
And you said to mix it with the food the mom is on.

I didn't know what she ate other than table scraps when we "took her in"
But she is on the Purina Little Bites, is that okay for the puppies or would puppy chow be better?

I would just call and tell him the dog moved the puppys and you can't find any of them! I would take that dog to a shelter!

I would, but he's got the neighbor watching us.
They've lived here 18+ years, so everyone in the surrounding is watching.
It's not a confirmed thing, but its a gut feeling.
and usually my feeling about that stuff is right.

And the dog catcher doesn't do crap!

I called to have some of the male dogs picked up,
5 hours later, i still looked like a window ornament.

I'm not a fan of Purina - it's a lot of filler and very little nutrition, however when you are feeding several dogs, it is more affordable.  What ever food you use, feed to mom as well.  You won't need bottles, just a shallow dish so the puppies can easily reach what is inside.  You may need to place a little of the mush on their nose to encourage them to try the food.  What ever the puppies don't eat, let the mom clean up with the puppies watching.  This will help them learn that eating out of the dish is a good thing.

It's the best food I find that doesn't upset the mom's stomach.
we tried different foods on her before he got preggo.

Cause they fed her off pure table scraps.
And there were times she was choking on bones and stuff, so i started tying her so she couldn't go eat that.

Call the ASPCA or your local humane society and let them know that he abandoned the dog and now he saying he wants you to ween the pups early and they are not ready, so he can take her back. Do everything you can to STOP that animal abuser!! Let them know everything he has done.

I really despise animal abusers!!

Quoting Mitch_Gray37:

Well now you have a choice, you can either give back the dog and tell him he will have to take the puppies also since they are not old enough to be weened from mom yet( depends on what state you live in depends on how old the pups can be before they can be taken from mom) or call the ASPCA/ Humane society back and let them know there are puppied involved and the guy now wants the dog back but wants to abandon the pups on you.

One question comes to mind, do you want to keep the dog? if so then you are going to have to make a choice. Not just for you and your family but for the sake of the dog and the pups.

If not then may I suggest you take her and the pups to the humane society and tell them you can not have her and the pups and let them know who the Ba@#$%@rd is that owns her and let them deal with it.

Either way good luck!!
