Curious to see what age groups everyone's children suffered from their stroke & how everyone found out about it.  Were you present when the stroke occurred?  What effects did the stroke have on your child?

I'll start:

Pre-natal stroke

Diagnosed at 12 months old (we noticed she was right handed -- hand preference is not determined at 9 months -- so the dr's appointments & tests began.

An MRI of her brain found that the stroke caused porencephatic cyst on right side of her brain, which contributed to her weakness on the left side

She is my little baby doll.

My oldest son now 12 years old had what was termed to me as an Introfetus Stroke. Basically he had his head caught in my pelvis and his cord around his neck. every contraction I had would cut off the blood to his brain. And the doctor waited to long to deliver.
He was diagnosed at 9 months, because he ALWAYS kept his right arm drawn to his chest and his hand clenched in a fist. the pediatrician refereed us to a neurologist who did a CT scan.
All of the problems he has had have been motor skills. He crawled late, walked late, still doesn't use his arm much. But he has had several surgeries on his leg to improve it. And is sharp as a tack.

Hi, I'm new here and new to the term "childrens stroke." I just found out yesterday that my daughter had a stroke sometime before she was 5 months old. We don't know if the stroke occurred inutero or after birth. I'd like to know, but I don't think we will ever know. My daughter is currently 15 months old and is not walking yet, but she continues to improve in using her right side. I have hope and faith in God that she will walk in time. May Gd bless...

My son was 2 days old when we found out he had a stroke.  He was seizuring  and was in NICU for 5 days after that.  He has been doing miraculously since then.  As of today, he is starting to wean off of the Pheno and we'll see what happens.  In my heart, I feel he will be fine.  So far, all has been going normal for him.  I just keep praying.  No matter what, I wouldn't change him for a second-I love him for everything he is and even more for how strong he is.  He has made me learn a lot about myself and more importantly-being a mom.  I continue to pray for all of your "babies" and for you!

We didn't find out my son had a stroke until he was 3 months old, but he was not even a 40 weeker. (He was born at 24 weeks) They did an MRI, and they found that he had an infarct in his cerebellum. We don't know if this was in my womb or after because he was so sick. It turns out he has a clotting disorder, and I just found out that I have 3, so I passed them on to him. He is 11 months old, 7 corrected and I think he is doing great for all that he has been through.

My son had a stroke as the result of a arteriovenous malformation, which is a tangle of blood vessels in his brain, that burst.  He was 2.6 years old.

As of 6/9/08 @ 10pm, the neurosurgeon said the CT scanned done earlier that day on my 2.5-year-old son,  was possibly a stroke. My Ex-husband and I noticed that he was not moving his left arm on 6/6/08. Then 6/7/08, his left leg was limping which was why we took him to his pediatrician on the afternoon of 6/9/08. My son is at the hospital waiting to have a MRI done on his head to get a more clearer answer. I pray it is not a brain tumor. I think I can cope better if he had a stroke..

My beautiful, amazing daughter Carli survived a stroke inutero.  At 12 months she was refered to a pediatric neurologist due to the fact that her motor skills were delayed.  She was able to roll over,  and if you put her in a sitting position, she could keep that position.  She could do very little besides that.   A MRI was performed, discovering evidence of an inutero stroke.  Meaning, there is a medium sized lesion in the deep white matter of the left side of her brain, resulting in right sided hemiparesis.  There is also a 3 centimeter arachnoid cyst in the left periventricle region of her brain, which I'm told is incidental, and probably unrelated to the stroke.  Carli is involved with physical and occupational therapy, and doing phenomenally well.  Her recovery is miraculous, and I mean that in a literal sense.  My full story is in my myspace blog at www.myspace.com/sissa_beedabee.

How awesome is this group?  It's wonderful to have a place to discuss these things.  I know that for me, personally, I know no other mothers that have had this experience.....

My son, Ryland, suffered a stroke during his delivery.  I had no fluid and his heartbeat was irregular but the doctor would not do a C-Section so he became oxygen deprived.  They didn't think he would live but he has come so far since then!  The stroke destroyed his vision and motor skills area of his brain so he are waiting to see what his life will be like.  He was diagnosed in April with Spastic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy.

Hi, My daughter Katie is a in utero stroke survivor. We found out when she was 7 months old.

Katie was born at 36 weeks via c-section due to low amionic fluid everything appered to be fine.

When we took her for her 4 month check the ped. noticed her soft spot felt like it had closed so he sent us for a x-ray. It came back fine.

When I took her for her 6 month check we had the other ped. in the pratice. I asked again about the soft spots because something just didn't seem right to me.

There is a little ridge on top of her head that you can feel. At the same time I mentioned how i thought Katie might be a lefty. The doctor told us that she should not have a preferance yet and ordered a MRI just to be safe. I remember her telling us it was probabley nothing.

When the ped. called and told me she wanted to see my husband and myself I knew there was something wrong.

I thought she was going to tell us Katie's skull was fused and she would need surgery. I was totally unprepaired to hear it was a stroke.

That was last Sept. 25th. I still remember it like it was yesterday and just typing this is bringing the tears all over again.

We went to she the Ped. Neuro. on the 26th. We were told that Katie had a old isciemic insult. The doctor explained that she had a stroke and that it damaged her left frontal, temporal and periatel lobes. She lost about half the left side of her brain.

Thank god we didn't see the MRI ourselves at that time. Katie's stroke is pretty extensive. At that time she was not yet sitting up by herself and we were told she would probably never progress past where she was at that time developmentaly.

I am thrilled to say the doctor's were totally wrong. Katie sat up by her self on time. She started walking at 12 months. She just got okayed to stop wearing her leg brace. She is climbing on everything and seems to be right on track. I believe she may end up with some speech issues and some behavioral stuff, but I guess we just have to wait and see.

Katie has been diagnosed with Spastic Cerebral Palsy Hemiparisis and Microcephaly both caused by the stroke. So far we do not know what caused the stroke but we did just find out that she is Homozygous for the MTHFR gene and she has a elevated protien c level.
