Hi everyone,
We will be moving to mayport in june. And I was just wondering if anyone had and advice on housing? And what renovations are they doing in the on base housing. If anyone has pictures of inside and outside of housing both on and off base that would be wonderful thanks a bunch!
I looked at the housing but I didn't like it very much. They have brand new housing but I think it goes to the people that are in the old housing first. You might be able to get on the list for it. The new housing is awesome but the old housing is not great. The old housing has very old appliances in the kitchens and the floor is some kind of multicolored concrete.
Sorry no one replied to your post. I forget about this group sometimes and don't come check out the posts.
I live off base in a town home about 10 min from base. We like it a lot here my only qualm is that it's more expensive then I would like to be paying but really it's worth it. You can rent a house pretty cheap in the Arlington area. Try going to militarybyowner.com and you can see places that people bought here and are trying to rent out to other military while they are away.
Good luck!
We just moved out of housing a mth ago. I hated it. They arent doing anymore renovations for awhile. The new houses look ok but the old ones are horrible. But if anything goes wrong in your house on base you better be willing to wait forever for them to fix it. We moved off base and spend $350 less then living on base. So I would look off base. Hope it helps.
we live on base and i like it better than off base. its generally safer than out in town, theres usually always cops driving around. i dont have a problem getting maintence out here, maybe 2 days max. i like that if something breaks i dont have to pay for someone to fix it if hubby is deployed. the only negative thing about it is the flooring sucks in the older houses, its like cement type floors. not very good for babies that are learning to walk. and the lack of storage space, but other than that i think its great. especially that theres no electric bill as well, in the extreme heat i can keep my a/c real cold or the opposite for the winter, works great because i never see the bill and stay comfy.
EW. I would NOT live in the on base housing for anything! The area right next to base is also VERY ghetto. My husband was deployed from Nov. 08 - May 09 and his friends wife lived in on-base housing while their ship was deployed and someone broke in and raped her while her husband was deployed! And it happened right there on base! I would recommend going towards the beach, or over the wonderwood bridge down merrill rd. Also, atlantic blvd has some nice places. And anything over the damespoint bridge by the airport, and towards callahan is nice:)
i live off base and my neighborhood is pretty quiet. its about 10-15 min drive to base but its not that bad. i agree with the posts about the base housing being pretty crappy. i was NOT impressed when i was moving here coming from san diego where the housing was so awesome and u had so many choices. hope you find something! there are lots of places to rent, try realtor.com if u decide not to live on base
Base housing in Mayport is a Joke. Like the others posts have said, when I lived in off base military housing it took them forever to come and do something. I lived in 2 different off base Military housings at Mayport. The first was a 2 bedroom and the next was a 3 bedroom. The two bedroom has lots of storage and I loved the place, hated the wall to wall carpet even in the dining room. There was no garage and the storage closet downstairs where you parked your car never locked or closed right, though I called on it many many times they were never able to fix it. it was also an upstairs unit, we got spiders and palmeto bugs once in a while but they were easy to deal with. over all it was a nice place, with lack of maintence service.
now the 3 bedroom that was a totally different story. the downstairs was all a white tile. It was hard to keep clean constantly with the kids and hubby and thier friends coming over. when you sweep the dirt goes in between tiles, I had to sweep and swiffer sweep. with moping I had to mop and swiffer mop and get down and clean base boards with a towel and cleaner. The laundry room is down stairs which I hated cuz you would have to gather laundry from upstairs, drag it ALL down stairs and do it all then fold it and bring it all back upstairs.... the place had a lot of good storage and a nice garage but half the time the garage door didn't open or shut by remote and never locked when you pressed the lock button. We called maintence many many times and they just said open and shut it manually..... then why the F*** have the remotes and make it electric? The back sliding door I called many times about it not locking, we would lock it and it would pop back up.... maintence couldn't figure out why and told me just to put a stick there.... wtf?............ when Tropical storm Fay came I had water pouring into my house from the frame work on the window and it got my couch all soaked I had to move it and soak up the water... when I called maintence they said I had to wait cuz they had trees down that needed to be removed.. um okay I guess that was more important??? I waited a month before something was done and they gaucked the window... next rainy day I had rain coming in again and had to deal with the situation.. they had to drill holes in the frame outside the window cuz water was collecting there and had to way to drain... now that place had 2 and 1/2 baths.... the one bathroom in the hall we had to lock up and block all holes in the door because we had palmeto bugs coming out of the toilet... no joke it was disgusting, we called maintence, they sent pest service and it didn't help... Also in that bathroom I would clean the toilet every day because each night even if we didn't use it, it had a black ring around the water line... it was nasty, so I locked it and blocked it off and never used it. My boys had to shower in our bathroom cuz I did not want to bring them in there for a bath (the only bathroom with a tub/shower) our bedroom only had a shower. We never had much of a spider problem, but often got lizards in the house, cuz they would crawl in the little crack from the screen door, that maintence told me there was no way to fix cuz the screen door wasn't shutting properly. When it came for our move out cuz I refused to stay there, this lady inspected it and said just do a sweep, mop, vac, and clean all appliances and what not she left me a list of things to do, I asked her about the scuff marks from the couch on the wall because of moving the furniture and from tropical storm fay and the couch getting wet it bled onto the wall she said oh don't worry about it.... we did a self clean, my husband cleaned one day I cleaned the next and we would flip flop... when inspection day came a new woman was there to inspect she asked if we did a self clean or a maid before she even came into the house when I said self clean she looked me straight in the eye and said, well I know you are going to get a lot of hits.. and she didn't even step in the house yet..... she hit me on things the other woman told me not to worry about, like the scuff marks on the wall and on the two walls, just so they could re-paint and what not that was 150.. wtf? she made a lot of other hits that totaled to 500 and the other lady told us don't worry about that, when I told this woman that we were told not to worry about it, her reply was, "well I am doing the inspection it needed to be done" really... OMG was I so pissed.... also a downsaid is you get crappy service and a crappy house and they pocket ALL of your BAH...
we moved off base where we are paying 699 for a 2/2 and yes we pay electric and water but I think it is worth it... we have a pool for free and work out center. We live just like 7-8 miles from base and it's on mayport road. I did have to sacrifice cabnet space a carpeted dining room, and one less bedroom, but it was worth it. and at this place when we have a problem, maintence comes and fixes it the same day and if they can't come that day they tell us they will def come tomorrow, beats waiting a week or longer, You should look up the Island Club apartments off of Mayport road... this place is also a gated community. it is a realy nice place. also you wanted some info about on base housing?
I know many that live on base my one friend saw some strange guy walking around outside the back of her house and looking in her windows and when she picked up the phone to call the base police he ran. from being inside base housing they also have the crazy white tiles that are hard to clean in the kitchen and they have the concrete in the living room and being that is so dark you don't realize the dirt on the floor but also hard to clean. But this couple is also looking to move out of base housing because they have just had it. The other person I know is a high risk pregnancy and her husband is in and out on short underways and she has had to call maintence many many times.... the dishwasher wouldn't work, the sink in the main bathroom kept getting clogged, the bathtub didn't drain right, then it started peeling and with her little boys that was a no no, the sink in her kitchen would get stocked up and clogg and she was just draining water from doing dishes, her toilets in both bathrooms started to just flood out of no where... after a week of maintence being there they said the sewer system was backed up on that block and many are having that problem... well with her being high risk remember, they told her she had to move and navy movers would move her ( nice right) and they would give her 600 on top of navy moving her for inconvience, I thought good deal... till she called me up crying cuz she had a week to mov and clean and guess what, hubby was not there to help cuz he was underway... she explained to housing that she was high risk and she would clean appliances and sweep and mop and that was it cuz housing told her they were going to rip the house down and all the houses on that block.... well they told her no she was going to clean all appliances and open windows and clean in between the windows and the runner where the window slides, she had to clean all walls and if not then re-paint..... she had to clean all bathrooms spotless, they said her house had to be move in ready... she asked why if they were knocking it down what was the point? She currently got done dealing with them and fighting with them had moved into yet another house on base but this time it is a 4 bedroom and she goes to use the brandnew dishwasher and it doesn't work... doesn't turn on.. maintence comes and says well it's plugged in and come to find out the dishwasher was defected and now she has to wait a few months for a new one... but they ordered in bulk and the last order to come was re-called and housing "forgot" about it and left the dishwashers in there and in other units...... hhhmmm also in the new house she was taking a shower and went into her closet where the walls meet and her wall and clothes were soaked... maintence somes and someone "forgot" to sotter the pipes there and that's why it leaked... this is a new remolded place on base....... I was so thankful we live off base now and have nothing to do with them.
Also a bit of info that was passed on... off base military housing is postponed due to the grounds being contaminated and them not being able to build on it cuz they can't get a permit, they have to take two layers of dirt off the ground then test it to see if they can build. On base looks nice but that building came to a hult till they get new cntractors cuz the last contractors there was someone on the team that was driving around trying to get little girls in his car and offering them candy. They had 2 girls on base report it and they finally caught him and it was a contractor..... not everywhere is safe but OMG news huh...... Best of luck on your housing search. Hope you find the right palce or if you live on base I hope you don't have half the problems we had
I've lived off base and now live on base. Neither were really that bad. I lived in Marsh Cove (off base) which only has two bedrooms. They are the newest of the housing and are two story. The downstairs is all tile and the upstairs is carpet. There is a one car garage and a screened in porch. I now live on base in one of the renovated ones. It is true that some of the units are not renovated and yes, the non renovated ones are kinda ugly. I'm in a renovated and it's not bad. I never have a problem with maintenance or with the housing office. The move in process and move out process is pretty easy. No matter where you go, I'm sure you'll find something wrong with it. Just take opinions with a grain of salt. It's obvious that we all have/had different experiences. I hope you find what you're looking for. : )
