Talking with my Mom the other day and she said she wished she had the 'fireless cooker' that belonged to her grandma. It went to another family member on her side.....anyway....I asked her what that was. She said it was a box on legs, had a stone with a handle that was heated on the stove. There was a pot that had two latches that made a tight fit. The pot was put into the box with the stone and it cooked food.....HMMMMM.....made me wonder.....I needed to know more.....so I google....lol....
I found that the fireless cooker is from Europe, came to America in the 1800's maybe earlier, originally called a 'hay box'. Used in areas which didn't have much fuel for burning and was very fuel economical, slow cooked the food. Also similar to the 'pit' cooking in the ground, same priciple.....origin of our electric crock pots & slow cookers of today.
Some have the stones and some do not. U can virtually make one out of anything....this is something to know! Especially with things going the way they are today! Groups are teaching this method of cooking TODAY to women in Africa who live with drought and little fuel to use for cooking. Check out the links below for pics & details on the fireless cookers!
