We're living in strange times, often distanced from loved ones by thousands of miles, long work hours, or transient lifestyles. We've become a nomadic society, favoring independence and experience over family and social identity. We are encouraged to go out into the world and find ourselves. And all this can lead to a sense of alienation, detachment, and, ironically, a struggle with personal identity. Often, as mothers, our children become our entire world. We seek connection through Playgroups or Mommy groups (or online groups). But what happened to the rest of ourselves, the life we lived before we became moms? Do you yearn to understand how we became such an isolated culture? Or are you just on a quest to find yourself among the Baby Einstein products, educational play mats, "earth-friendly" diapers, parenting books, and soiled play clothes that surround you? Would you like to know, perhaps, when we became a society of parents on a race to create the most gifted, advanced, genius of a child? After all, didn't it used to be about building happy children? Does very new piece of knowledge you acquire feel meaningless and arbitrary next to our boundless ignorance? Than you might be depressed... Kidding. But you might have a touch of post-modern angst. No, there's no pill for it, but you can talk about it here and maybe feel a little better. This group is for moms who feel any of this or something similar and want to discuss it or just ask for advice about life issues. Maybe you just don't feel like you fit the mold for today's mom. Well, you're not alone.
This group is open to free thinking and expression. No bashing is allowed under any circumstances (And if you wonder why that statement must always be emphasized in group introductions, you probably belong here). Friendly debate is fine. But let's keep it civilized. We're here for each other. So, talk, girls! I want to know what your thinking. Tell me what's on your mind!
