My husband is being stationed at Ft. Hood and we are leaving our SC home with 4 kids, a dog, cat and a lizard to drive out there Sunday evening. We will be staying at the barracks turned into a Holiday Inn on base until housing becomes available. I'm looking forward to making new friends and meeting everyone! Any tips, suggestions, advice etc would be greatly appreciated as we are new to the military life!
Did you guys already get on the waiting list for housing? Last time I checked there was quite a wait for on post housing. We got on the list for a 5 bedroom in october and didn't get called till june. We ended up turning it down due to us resigning our lease because we weren't expecting them to call us then. Now we just bought a house and dh is being sent to Korea for a year. Living here is like living anywhere else. It is what you make of it. Right now making friends will seem hard, another mom posted about this recently, but remember that it is winter and the weather is crappy right now. If you have younger kids I would take advantage of the playgroup on post to help you meet people. I met one of my best friends at the one they had at the cove ymca. How old are your kids? I have a dd9 (10 in april), ds7, ds2 (3 in april), and a 6 month old dd. I am moving to Belton this weekend but after everything settles with our move and my dh going to Korea if you want to hang out and meet at the park just pm me or something.
We were told that showing up with our family on base they will move us to the top of the housing list and give us priority. My kids are 11, 9, 7, and 3. We will be in Ft. Hood as of Monday, so we can't meet you for a playdate ;) But Belton is a beautiful place to live and you will love it!

If yall are in the 5700 Series Hotel Rooms... that is literally around the corner from our house! We have been back here 2 years as of this month, really haven't met anyone.. We have a 10 yr old DD, 2 yr old DS, 1 yr old DS. Always up to meet new friends and playmates for the kiddos!
It's the Holiday Inn, the barracks they turned into hotel rooms or something. I would love to meet up at the local park next week!

Yeah Im pretty sure those are the ones just around the corner from our house by Club Hood! They have a play ground outside the "HOTEL" for the kids. Hopefully it isn't rainy and cold otherwise we can find an alternative! :) YAY I am so excited!
If you're looking for off post housing, Harker Heights has great, safe subdivisions with nearby schools and parks. 15 min from main gate. I wouldn't live anywhere else, imho. drive carefully.
Also, Chaffee CDC offers hourly care at $4/hr. The staff are friendly & the curriculum is great and fun. Be sure to stop by the Rivers BLDG 121 aka Parent Central for details and opportunities for children & parents via SKIES, CYSS registration & New Parent Support (which isn't just for new parents) play date info. Welcome!! It's cold & raining right now :-(
