I was just wondering, for those of you being induced, is it for medical reasons or is you doctor just allowing you to do so? Thanks.

  • My dr gave me the option... We could either wait it out until my due date of july 13th.... or pick a day within only a week early that I would want to have him. So I picked a date (7th) and it gives us more of a game plan. I have been heathly the whole time and so has he... and his weight is great. 6.5 lbs already at my 36 week apt. So she sees no problem taking him a little earlier. I do hear though not alot of dr's do this. So I feel lucky. I'm exactly 37 weeks today.

  • my dr would let me if i wanted to w/o a medical reason... i was going to with my 2nd son but went into labor the night before (thank goodness cause i was scared to be induced lol) and we've decided just to wait it out with this one (even though i'm miserable)

  • I was induced my first pregnancy exactly one week ahead of my due date because of the size of my little man. My doc was nervous that he might go over 9lbs (or worse up to 10lbs) and I would not be able to deliver vaginally which is the way I wanted to go. This time we are going to also plan an induction because at my 34 week appt the baby was already 6lbs or more, and we are afraid he might be bigger than my first was.

Also... my doctor will only induce if you are already showing clear signs of labor coming soon. With my first I was dilated to 3cm and was 100% effaced before I was induced. He wants you to be dilating on your own, as well as effacing before he will decide to go through with an induction.

We will talk more about it at my 36 week appt which is this thursday!

  • My son had a birth defect that caused me to be at very high risk for complications, so my labor and delivery needed to be at a hospital 2 hours from home and with the right combo of doctors on duty. So it really was for medical reasons. I delivered my son vaginally with no real complications (his heartrate kept dropping, but he was ok). I only got cervidil with him.

With my first son, I wasn't induced but, my labor stalled a couple times, so I was given piticion twice. I too delivered him vaginally with no complications.

  • I was induced at 40wks 4 days this time around. My Dr gave me the choice. I was so uncomfortable and my cervix showed no signs of changing from 2cms for 4 weeks!!! ...and my son was still high up. So I decided for the induction which I am glad I did because he was 9lbs 6ozs at that point! lol...so he was a big boy already. I also had to be induced for my daughter before him. She was pretty stubborn too. I was 42 weeks with her and they gave me no choice at that point!

  • My dr induced me because he said that the baby was a real big baby.  I let him induced me but I would never do it again she was 8.3. So I would say by his choice it was not medically needed.

  • I was induces, because i asked to be. My husband was away at basic trainning and his graduation was a week after the baby was due. So i asked to be induced so i could be at my husbands graduation cause he didnt have any other family going to be there. If I wasnt for that i would have never asked.

  • My daughter was due July 13th. I was already 4cm dilated at my checkup that day and the doctor didnt want my pregnancy to go beyond 40 weeks. there were no medical reasons for it though, just simply that he didnt want the pregancy to get to the 41st week. So I had a scheduled induction on July 17th. I was still 4cm when I went in for my induction, everything went absolutely wonderful and progressed very quickly.  I was in labor for under 6 hours and we were blessed with a sweet baby girl.

It is better to let the pregnancy run its course and for the labor to start naturally on its own. Too many women now aday are signing up for c-sections and inductions when it is not necessary. they simply want a baby on this day or that day, or while gramma is in town, or before the sunday football game, etc.  However there are risks to letting a pregnancy go beyond 41 weeks in which an induction is needed and there are circumstances where troubles arise with the mama or the baby where induction is necessary.
