My  husband's birthday is July 20th, and my babies due date was July 26th(my dad's birthday).  So I was hoping that my daughter would be born on my husbands birthday.  All week long I had been having more and more sparatic  contractions, on his birthday the contractions were more consistent, every 5-10 minutes, but weren't painful.  By night time they were every 5-8 minutes and  felt like very minor cramps.  My doctor told me I should go in when the contractions were 5-10 apart because I needed to get two doses of penacilin, since I tested positive for the Group B bacteria.  So at 4am (July 21st)  I called the hospital and asked if I should come in, the nurse said I was probably still in early labor (since the contractions didn't really hurt)  and didn't need to come in just yet. I called again around 5pm since the contractions were more painful, but since I considered them tolerable, the nurse told me again I didn't need to come in. I mentioned that I needed to get the two shots of penacilin for the Group B and she assured me that I would have plenty of time when I did come in.   Well an hour later the contractions were 3 minutes apart and more intense.  I waited for 20 minutes to see if they were consistently 3 minutes apart.  I called one more time and told them what was going on. The nurse still sounded like I really didn't need to come in, but I wasn't going to wait anymore.  I wanted to make sure I got those two doses. So I went to my bedroom, where my husband was taking a nap and told him we needed to go to the hospital.  I started to get things ready as he slowly got up.   In my head I was thinking, what is he doing, we need to go.  He told me later that he didn't think I was really in labor because I didn't seem to be in that much pain. We got to the hospital at 7pm. The contractions were definitely more intense, but tolerable. At this point I began using the lamaze breathing to get through the contractions. The nurse hooked me up to check the baby's heartbeat and the contractions. Even she thought  I would be going home because I was so calm. After 5 tries, the nurse finally got the IV in ( interestingly enough that was more painful then the contractions at that time).  Around 9:30 the doctor checked me and said was 5 cm dialated.  So I asked for the IV pain medication, thinking I was going to be there for a long time.  By 10pm it had worn off so  I asked for a second dose, since by then my pain level was a 10. The nurse asked me if I just wanted an epidural  and  I said yes, since I could only get 1 more dose of the IV pain medication.  the doctor came in to check me again and said  I was now 6 cm. The second dose did absolutely nothing and I was feeling such intense pressure, it was hard to stay completely still for the epidural, but they had it in wiithin a half hour.  I felt like I really needed to push, but I was only 6 cm dialated or so we thought.  Well the doctor came and checked me again at 11pm and realized that  I had some sort of deformity in the birth canal. There was a piece of skin that ran down the middle from the cervix to the opening. So when she had been checking how far  I was dialated, she was checking from that piece of skin. I wasn't just 6 cm dialated when they gave me the epidural, I was really already fully dialated.  Luckily  I could still feel a little bit on my right side.  They had me start pushing and at 12:27 am on July 22nd, my baby girl was born. Alexandra was 5 lbs 13 oz and 19 1/2 inches long.

I've read a lot of stories where the nurse  doesn't believe the mother when she says she is ready to push.  Some woman do have fast labors. I was planning on having a midwife at my daughters birth, but I was finally added to my husbands insurance at the  beginning of July and so I had to get a new doctor and go to a different hospital for the birth.
