My 8 yr old aspie still has problems with riding a bike and tieing his shoes
Actually I can't even get him to try very often. He is delayed in school a bit but, is considered higher level as far as conversation . Most people are surprised when I tell them he has aspergers. They see it when and if they spend some time around him because he stims and has his obsessions with movies and animals but, I just know he is capable of doing more than he does. I just don't know if I'am hindering his progress by continuing to do things for him or what. When I do get him to try , he does but then gets frustrated when he has trouble. He looks genuinely puzzled though,as if he really doesn't get it,so I feel bad . I don't want to push too hard. ????????
My 10 yr old Aspie just learned how to ride two wheels 1 1/2 yrs ago and still has issues tying his shoes. He will do it on his own time. No worries momma.

My 8 year old aspie can not tie his shoes either. He gets too frustrated. He also is behind a bit in school yet can read at 4th grade level (he is in 3rd grade). We always got him velcro shoes, but lately have not been able to find them in his size anymore.
I believe Easter Seals has bike therapy program. Although I have not signed my 5 year old aspie up for it, I think I might consider it in the future. If I remember correctly, It is for 8 year olds and up. Hope this helps.
My son is 11 and still can't tie his shoes or ride a bike either. He doesn't seem to show an interest in the bike, and that's okay with us, but I have been working with him to tie his shoes for what feels like an eternity. I realize his fine motor skills and concentration skills need work, and I figure that he will get it in time, when he's ready. Knowing him like Ido, he'll probably come along one day and just be tying his shoes like he's known how all along. Good luck, Momma!

Wow...this makes me feel better. My 7 y/o PDD-NOS has exact same issues! Loves to look at his cool bike in the garage, but screams when we try to make him sit on it! I tie his shoes before school and he usually comes home with the laces tucked into the sides.
My 9 yo aspie cant tie his shoes either. Gets very frustrated. So dont feel bad. My theory is ..someday , we will get it! Until then, we will keep buying the cool looking sketchers, z strap shoes for when hes at school.
My NT teens never learned to ride a bike, either. They were both afraid of falling. One of them at least tried, the other wouldn't. Now the same one who wouldn't try is 19 and afraid to learn to drive (sigh). He's always been very safety-conscious, and freaks out if someone is doing something dangerous.
