Hi Heather,

Coconut oil is really benifital for our kids!  It has antibacterial properties in it and so many other health benifits.  Should be pretty easy to mix into foods, I used to use it for my son Owen, you can find it at most health food stores :)

Does cooking it remove the benefits? I bake with it frequently, works really well.

A presenter at the A.R.I. conference, who is also on the spectrum, strongly recommended coconut: oil, milk and meat. He actually travels with fresh coconut that he opens and eats right in his hotel room.

I read an extensive account of a woman who uses coconut oil as part of the treatment for her husband's alzheimers. Here is a link that discusses this, and why it is good for the brain:

Here is one of the cautions:

"Dr. Veech stresses the importance of consulting a physician before trying coconut oil at home. He said ingesting too much of one type of fat can be dangerous and can also cause diarrhea and vomiting."

I use it for cooking primarily.

My fear is that my son has such a sensitive stomach! I worry about this irritating him but willing to try it at least once just to see. :)

My son's therapist had a good idea I might try. She said maybe make a "smoothie" with frozen stawberries and put 1 TBSP of the coconut oil in there so that he barely tastes it. Tried coconut milk and that didn't go over at all, he sent me to time out. LOL!

My only way is to mix in oatmea for my son, it is how I have to hide everything...1tbsp good to start they so no more then 3.5, but that is for adults...let me know how it goes.  I haven't purchased yet.

I also just tried some coconut oil in my son's rice. He is a very picky eater and won't eat much. Well, to my surprise he ate all of it tonight. He never noticed a difference. So I am going to keep mixing it in his food. eating
