I was thinking that it might be fun to 'role-play' some conversations with school - with the beginning of school starting, I've noticed a lot of questions lately that stem from communicating effectively with school.

Who's up for a 'fake' conversation with a 'school official'?  I'll play the 'devils advocate' (LOL!!) and you'll post requests that you need from school.  Be prepared - I'm not going to want to cooperate! LOL!!  This will hopefully make it a little easier to communciate effectively with your school.

So - post a question/problem that you want to discuss with your school (it can be fake, if you like.....) - I'll respond as 'school' - what I want to see is clear, concise 'arguements/questions' to school about services/problems.

In essence, don't give me a chance to say 'No'!  LOL!!

Duncan is having issues with his spelling because of his APD (Audio processing Dysfunction). He knows how to spell everything as long as he can respond orally.  When it comes time to write down his Spelling test, he gets his vowels mixed up. ONLY when he has to write them down.
So, we need to set something up, whether it's doing his test orally or giving him more time.

YAY!  Good start!  Here we go:

Well, I'm not sure how we can accomodate that.  Do you think we have the time to orally test every student that has problems with handwriting? I'm sure he'll do just fine if we just give him a little more time to write his answers.

How do you respond?

OK
My son has trouble attending throughout the day.   Could we incorporate activities throughout the day to release his energy so that he will attend to difficult tasks that take concentration - like handwriting, journaling, etc.  He is in K and Kresource the other part of the day.

(this will be an easier way to 'keep track', I think! :)

Well, they take quite a number of breaks in Kindergarten, as well as all the different activities in the classroom; what else did you have in mind?  We really don't have the personnel to take your son outside or to go get a drink every 10 minutes..... don't you think it would just be easier for everyone if you put him on medicine that works??

(just had to throw that last one in! LOL!!)

Your response?

I'm not asking you to orally test every student I am asking you to test ONE, MINE. And it is NOT his "handwriting" that is an issue, it is that he cannot process all of those thoughts AND write at the same time. And no, I did not mean more time to write his answers. I meant, perhaps he can take his test after or before every one else, maybe after school.  Infact, this is the choice. Either you give him his test after school, or you test him orally. And if you do chose to test him after school, if that does not help, if that does not solve the problem, then you will just have to find a way to give him an oral test.

YAY ME! LOL
Thank you!
I am REALLY REALLY REALLY BAD at confrontation.. let's just hope I can do this for real, in person, because this is the exact conversation I have to have this coming week.

I hear ya - I HATE confrontation - makes me very anxious, gives me headaches, can't eat...... have gotten better at hiding all that, and have become fairly effective.... but that doesn't make it any more comfortable for me!

YAY!!  I'm so glad we did this - I really was hoping for just this thing: to be able to practice saying what we need to say, and 'rebutting' some of the rather ridiculous arguments that we hear.... so that hopefully, when you do this later, it'll feel a little more comfortable!

You did a great job - just remember that most of the time, they will find ways to 'not' do what you ask..... so, when you give them options that are acceptable, at the very least, you'll get something close to what you want!  You CAN do it!!

Well, if they don't follow through with either services agreed to, accomodations, etc., this is when you go digging for information.
Is it something offered to another student?
Is it something easily accomodated?
Can your child receive services alongside another child?
Is it listed on an IEP/504, and isn't being implemented?

These are the kinds of questions you should ask yourself, and then start asking around.....  always, always ALWAYS put requests in writing/email, and always follow up any meetings or conversations with a note that basically says, 'X is what I understand we decided; please let me know if I misunderstood.'  Always ask for a reply in writing.
