I decided to try melatonin on my 7 year old son because he was having a difficult time going to sleep at night. I give him 3 mg and he will be asleep within 2 hours. However, he will not stay asleep. Should I try to up the dosage to 5 or 6 mg? Anyone have experience with this? Help, I need some advice! (I'm sitting here on CafeMom at 3:40 am because my 7 year old got me up, not because of my teething 5 month old.)
I give my 8 yr old 5mg. She sleeps all night and actually gets up better in the moring but she don't get it everynight. Hope that helps.
I give my 8 yr old 9 mg. My doc said that for his size and age 9 mg is the max dose. I would try give him a little more at a time, to see what works, up to 9mg. Hope this helps.
IT WORKS PRETTY GOOD WITH OUR KIDS ALSO BUT I WOULD ASK YOU DOC. BEFORE UPING IT.
I just started giving my gd melatonin 3 mg and was wondering what dosage she should be at. She weighs 71 lbs and is almost 11 yrs old.
The 3 mg seems to help but maybe I should increase it to 6 mg to see if that helps even more?????
I give my son who does not have ADHD 6 mg he has trouble sleeping sometimes and it really helps, He is 77lbs and 10 yrs old. Hope this helps.
I give my 9 yr.old who weighs about 77 lbs. 3mg. It still works for him in the summer I don't give it to him.
I give my 5 year old 3 mg of melatonin.
I just wanted to caution you that too much melatonin can give anyone bad/crazy dreams so just be careful not to give too much.
My 10 year old son did take three 3 mg melatonins...he just recently began taking Intuniv which apparently makes him tired in the evening too (he takes it in the a.m.) so I reduced his melatonin to two 3 mg now...and considering reducing it again to just one. From what I have read about melatonin, we shouldn't just give it to our children every single day because then the body forgets how to produce melatonin naturally so everywhere I have read suggests we give it...then stop for awhile til problems arise again then give for awhile and then stop, etc...
No don't increase. It's not a time release thing. It's just meant for getting you to sleep not staying asleep. If he's having trouble more than occasional insomnia than you need to take him to doctor. Something else may be wrong, or could give better suggestions. Meletonin can be addictive and at that age shouldn't even take that much. I have 2 boys with insomnia one mild and one quite severe. Good Luck!!!
