My DS is 13 and has ADHD, combined type. He is on Concerta and Zoloft. He is also in therapy with his 4th therapist. He has a real problem with self-control when it comes to computer games. He has been caught sneaking into our bonus room early in the morning and late at night to play when we are asleep. If he is grounded from them, he has found the confiscated item (Gameboy) by searching the house for it and hiding it under his bed. He will then use it when we are sleeping. When he is on the computer to do a legitimate school project, he will play games online if we are out of the room. He deciphered a password I put on my computer to prevent this and used the internet. He has stolen the Iphone from my purse and used it without permission and while grounded. The latest is that he is in a computer class at school. He has failed it with a 54% because he simply does not do the work. He actually plays games on the internet in class. The teacher catches him and tells him to stop and he just starts up again when the teacher walks away. Otherwise, he is an honor student and has no behavioral issues at school. He has had numerous behavioral consequences that seem to have no impact. I am starting to think it is like an addict. He will go to any length to get his "drug.' Anyone else seen this type of issue?
That sounds like my daughter, especially when she is not on her meds. She will do anything and everything to get onto the computer. She even fixed the internet connection on a computer that my step-father, who is in IT, couldn't fix. I have to password protect everything with internet access.
my 14 yr old ds doc explained to us that he's "hyper" focused on the computer games. ADHD actually causes him to focus intently on things that he finds interesting. If it does not interest him there is very little to no focus. So there are games on the computer that he can play for hours on end without even moving out of the chair...this from a child who usually can not sit still for more than a second or two.
his IEP coach has implemented this at school. my ds brings his laptop and is allowed to use it in some of his classes...he plays non-internet games while quietly sitting and listening to the teacher. he also uses it to take class notes and has to e-mail them in the evening to his IEP coach to show he is using his puter for the assigned reasons. this is the first year he's been able to do this and seems to be working out really good. his puter is locked up at school when he's not using it and the school even provided him a lappy carrying case. this is also the first year I'm not being called into the office every other day. he got off to a rough start to the year but then ds and the coach came up with this computer plan and it's been smooth sailing ever since *knock on wood*
THis is what I was going to say. If you think about it in the terms that your child needs the computer to calm down...taking it away will make it worse for him.

I've replied to a few mom's posts already. I've researched this for more than 10 yrs. My sons ADD is gone. He did abnormal impulsive things, no hyperactivity. A few of his elementary school teachers told me he was the most unfocused child they'd ever seen. This natural supplement is in all vitamin stores but I found that few vit store employees know much about it. A scientist told me about Phos and my son has been the average teenage boy eversince. Phos is a lipid, a fat. It's soy based. I tried telling my son's doctor about it, he didn't want to hear it. He doesn't make a dime off me for ADD anymore. That's why he didn't want to know about it. It takes 3-4 months to absorb into the brain. it takes time to leave the brain also, so when we have a hectic morning and I forget to give it to him, he's exactly the same as he was the day before. No side effects. It helps with focus. Since it helps with focus, it stands to reason that the hyperactivity wouldn't be as bad since the brain isn't jumping from 1 thought to the next. AND it's natural !! Not only natural but 1 of the few supplements in vit stores that you can't overdose on. Most vit stores only have Phos in 100mg. It's not enough for serious ADD like our kids. I found 300mg at Puritan's Pride 800-645-1030. The 300mg is a tablet, maybe too large for younger kids to swallow. There's also 200mg softgels. To get an average of 300mg daily, try 200mg ... take 2 one day and 1 then next. Continue the pattern. I've done my research, I doubt that it's less expensive anywhere else. They send quarterly catalogs and have good sales. Right now, there's a BUT 2 GET 3 FREE sale. As I said, they have regular good sales, it is an expensive supplement. Since my sons been on it, I've never paid the full price. Buying in bulk helps too. Ok, here it is
THIS IS A 6 MO OLD POST. 300MG WAS DISCONTINUED .. COULD COME BACK IF ENOUGH PEOPLE COMPLAIN.
200mg product #16539 60softgels (approx 1 1/2months worth) $63.99 * * With the BUY 2 GET 3 FREE you'll have 7 1/2 months worth !
THIS MAY LOOK EXPENSIVE ... IT'S MONEY VERY WELL SPENT. ACTUALLY WITH THE SALES ... NOT BAD AT ALL.
When
my son was leaving 5th grade his teacher told me he'd never pass 6th
grade. She worked hard to keep him focused all day each day. I found
Phos that fall, started him on 100mg since I didn't know about 200mg or
300mg. There was an obvious improvement but he still needed help. Since
I found 300mg, my now 17yr old son has a main part in all his school's
plays, holds down a p/t job year round and is on the honor roll. Never
did I dare hope for this for him. Seemed impossible. He has lots of
friends and is as happy and 'normal' as any kid. AND... HE WAS ADDICTED, PRACTICALLY, TO THE TV. IF IT WAS ON, HE COULDN'T FOCUS ON ANYTHING ELSE NO MATTER WHAT WAS ON .... AN INSURANCE COMMERCIAL, AN ADULT SHOW HE COULDN'T UNDERSTAND .... HE 'HAD' TO WATCH IT.
And before finding PHOSPHATIDYLSERINE, I got rid of most sugar and bad carbs from his diet. Vegs are carbs but good carbs. Higher protein helped alot but that's like the Atkins Diet and not good for the liver.
AND BEDWETTING !! A great added benefit .... We're actually all on Phos in our house. My husband, 15yr old son & I are all on 200mg. We're all more focused but the best surprise benefit is that my 15yr old stopped bed wetting a few months after beginning it. His dr said 10% of all boys bed wet, very common. He said ' his brain isn't getting the message from bladder to hold so the bladder releases '. The brain gets the message now !! It's been awesome. He never slept over another kids house and the few times he had a child sleep over, he had to drink nothing all evening and I had to get him up shortly after midnight to urinate. He's never wet the bed since ... a few yrs !!! It's a terrific supplement. Fairly obvously, I have nothing to gain in suggesting this company and/or this supplement. Have your spouse read this and do your own research. I'm available for questions. You can email me directly with the link below ... I'll try to get back to this post to view any responses.
I'm truly passionate about not drugging our kids if at all possible. I was faced with it too. Thanks for reading and good luck to us all ! Take care, Susan
It's actually easy to pronounce .. Phos pha tidyl serine ( fos fa tidal serine )
I WILL TALK WITH ANYONE ON THE PHONE. EMAIL ME DIRECTLY SINCE I DON'T GET TO SEE CAFEMOM VERY OFTEN. TO THE MOM WITH THE 'SWEETTOOTH CHILD ' .... YOU REALLY SHOULD CONSIDER THIS !! I THINK THINGS START MAKING SENSE IN THE BRAIN. PLS DON'T FORGET PRAYER ......
It deifnately works as a reward and motivator, but if he is playing games in class and failing there is no choice but to have the teacher take it away. It is innappropriate to use it at that time.
