My son just turned five. He has pretty severe ADHD. He is on meds for it now but we still have problems. He alomost killed our kitten, he talked the other nieghborhood kids into beating our dog with a sand shovle, he screams all the time, destroys the house in the middle of the night, beats the animals, hurts himself, he gave him self a blackeye because he hands wouldnt "listen" he throws things and thats just some of the things he does. Its rollercoster ride. One minute hes fine the next hes off the wall. I recently started a blog to try to raise adwareness so more people know what we go through daily. Idk if im allowed to posted the link for it here. I read over hte rules and I couldnt find anything again blogs. Ill post it at the bottom. If im breaking a rule im really sorry. I just hate when peole say oh its something the teachers make up. Come to my house and deal with my son. I cant even find a sitter for him. He recently went to sleepover party for a friend they called to have us come pick him up. Simple things my son just cant do and a pill doesnt solve everything. any thought, tips, adivce are all welcome
i think it does sound more than ADHD. The hurting animals is a huge warning sign that it COULD BE more than ADHD-I think it depends how where he is developmentally. Sometimes children who have developmentl delays will harm animals becuse they dont understand they are harming them, or possilby an impulse control issue. But as you describe it; it sounds more intentional than impulsive or "not knowing" but it really is a sign of something more serious and could very likely lead to conduct disorder. It sounds like he is really hurting inside. have you tried different meds? some meds can have a very aggressive reaction in kids, if they do you ahve to switch. I really honestly hope you are working very closely with a therapist. animal cruelty and self injury is serious. I know when my son was very young, 3 n 4, he woudl just randomly walk by our dog and boot him.... out of the blue. We had to take VERY SWIFT and immediate action on his behavior to be sure it didnt continue.. in my sons case, he did it implusively, not to necessarly hurt the dog, but to get it out of his way, quick. Research in psychology and criminology shows that people who commit acts of cruelty against animals don't stop there; many of them move on to their fellow humans. Children who harm family pets are at risk for other kinds of acting out behavior and need immediate help. There are lots of possiblities of what could be going on, ODD, conduct disorder, attachment difficulties, exposure to domestic violence,,, or very wrong medication for him. I hope you get things worked out, It sucks when kids feel so out of control!

yes he does the same thing. He will just walk by the dog and kick them or jump off the couch onto them. I know that it shows that murders have done the same thing in the childhood and that scares me. It just seems like to him its funny and something he does it out of anger. He has been doing it for about a year now and we always punish him for it casue its nto ok. the poor animals go running if they see him coming.
