We tried to go without medicine but he was having a hard time in school. He has ADHD and autism and without the meds he is all over the place and his anxiety level is really high. He is 6 and just started on tenex about 2 weeks ago. This week he has actually done classwork which he hasn't done at all this school year. He still acts like himself he has only calmed down a little.
There are probably other moms on here that will be able to give you really great advice on natural remedies.
Quoting DDDaysh:
The right medication will allow your child to be himself, not hide him. However, the medications are tricky things. Have you discussed your concerns with your child's specialist.
I really love this advice for two reasons.
1. You should be wary of giving your child medicine of any kind. That's not ignorant - it's smart. Your job as a parent is to look at all options and investigation and informed decisions are part of being a good parent - so kudos!
2. I agree that meds should not "change" your child BUT rather help them be who they are really meant to be. My step mom has diabetes. Her insulin allows her to be a wonderful, productive, loving woman with a family and great job. That being said, she wouldn't be all of those things with just insulin - it was also her drive, ambition, upbringing, faith and dedication that did that.
So, talk to your doctor and ask them the "pros and cons" and LISTEN to what they say. Investigate the "facts" and not the "rumors" that are out there then make an informed decision. Then know that you have done what you think is best for your child and go enjoy your life and your family. It might not be easy and there will be struggles but you will know you have done the best you can do and that is all anyone could ever ask you to do!
Good Luck!
You just said something that hit me! The school "brought it up". Does your child have a formal ADD diagnosis? If not, then you should discuss whether child should be tested for ADD AND not just medicated. ADD is a medical condition and your doctor needs to be involved. Schools might "suspect" ADD but they are not trained medical practitioner and as such should not offer medical advice. In my state, we had to have the school test my child for learning disabilities PRIOR to his ADD diagnosis screening so beware and/or you might want to check into this simultaneously.
Good Luck!
In my opinion many schools "bring it up" because they don't know how or don't want to "handle" ADHD children. They want a fast solution that they don't have to work for. It is very unfortunate. However, It IS fortunate for our children that there are many options.
Just because your child has ADD/ADHD doesn't mean they have to be medicated. There are other options, Therapy is an option that many overlook but is sometimes a major player in an ADHD child. Vitamins and Supplements can also do wonders. Many ADHD children are vitamin defficiant, supplementing and adding a better diet can help.
As for medications, We have used Concerta in the past with good results. Currently we are doing it naturally because I hated medicating. Would I medicate again? Yes. Would I like it? No. ADHD is just like any disease.... sometimes you have to take steps that you may not like to make life better. If you were a diabetic would you take medicine? Sure you would. The same applies here. But for many it is a last resort, just like if diet and exercise don't help your diaabetes...
Talk to you doctor, have him offically tested and diagnosed if he hasn't been. Then you can choose which option would be best for your family! :)
