My son was just diagnosed ADHD NOS and I am hoping to modify the behavior with supplements and heard people mention Melatonin.
What other supplements do you give your children? Did you try supplements before medication?
Just wondering and appreciate everyones personal stories.
WE use calcium, magnesium, fish oil, vit. b, vit. c, and melatonin at night to help with sleep. There are also amino acids that you can use but I didn't like the imformation I found on them for my son so I skip them.
A lot of these can be added with simple diet changes too... eat more fish, milk, protein, veggies... knock out the dyes and sugars. :)
Goodluck!

Both my kids (one ADHD/one not) are given a myriad of supplements specially tailored to their specific needs based on their specific lab work. My son (ADHD, though we were able to rid him of that diagnosis within 1 month of starting a biomedical approach (nearly 8 years ago) takes B vitamins, Acetyl-L Carnitine, vitamins C, D, E, calcium/magnesium blend, cod liver oil, borage oil, iron, zinc, selenium, and a few others. Sounds like a lot but the vitamins are compounded so it's only a few pills in the morning.
Diet was a huge part of our success too. We cut out all foods containing artifical anything (colorings, flavorings, preservatives, additives, etc.), and removing all dairy (DS was casein-sensitive which caused cerebral allergies (delayed food hypersensitivities that manifested themselves as ADHD behaviors), not to be confused with lactose intolerance). Within 2 days, he said he felt more awake and focused than he ever had before.
We never did meds ... simply not an option, imo. And there was no need once we saw such positive change with biomed. Our DAN doc will work with parents who choose the med route; often times the supplements will lessen the amount of meds actually needed.
WE do diet and it is amazing for them and also myself. My sleeping changes and we also add omegas and change it up. Right now I am adding sea vegetables to there smoothies.
But it is a nightmare when they have ate soemthing. Especially as valentines day just passed in the class. I have a few days to get her system back in check. It will be a very long day today.
