many kids dx with ADHD are really just gifted. I took my son in for an assessment and it turns out he is just extremely gifted. If you look up dabrowski overexcitabilty it fits him exactly. I'm so glad I left the last dr who wanted to medicate him within minutes of our first meeting.

My son had an IQ test done two years ago & did the Conner's assesment as well. He's not only gifted but still exhibits ADHD symptoms. Marcelis IQ was 119 two years ago, he's being tested again this year

Yes, two years ago we found out his IQ is very high.   But he still has learning disabilities, ADHD, Sensory Issues, an IEP and Special Ed classes.

Kids with ADHD often are high IQ.   It is just they also have other problems   ;-)

My son has had one.  He is "above average" but not in the gifted range, except in working memory where he is below average.  That is a pattern typical in ADHD as well.

I was "gifted" as a child, and still probably had ADHD.  The giftedness likely hid the ADHD.

Honestly, the "bored gifted child" theory doesn't really help things much.  For one thing, most kids that are truly gifted and just bored react to rewards and consequences in a way that ADHD kids and gifted ADHD kids do not because they do not have the ability to do so.

Good point, DDaysh.   Yes, my son also was low in the working memory area.

My son is Gifted and has ADHD. Both are pretty obvious. For instance, the ADHD makes it so that he can only remember 2 directions at a time & that is an improvement! A gifted child without ADHD would not be sitting on the floor with only one sock on because he forgot he was getting dressed. He also makes up and solves his own math problems, such as figuring out in his head what the poker chips in a container are worth at age 7.

Sometimes, being Gifted will mask the ADHD and sometimes the ADHD will mask the Gifted. We can deal with the gifted by giving him lots of reading material. It is the ADHD that makes our lives challenging. Plus, now we are trying to deal with his situational anxiety.

For anyone on here who thinks that her child might be both, I strongly recommend the book Misdiagnosis and Dual Diagnoses of Gifted Children and Adults: ADHD, Bipolar, OCD, Asperger's, Depression and Other Disorders by James T. Webb. If you go on Amazon, you can look at some of the pages. I found it at my library.

My son has had an IQ test done 2 times now and tested above average (129). He is also ADHD, anxiety and High functioning Aspergers as diagnosed by 3 different professional. The medication definitely helps with his hyperactivity so he is able to do better in class. The 2 diagnosis are not mutually exclusive or inclusive, all kids are different.

I chuckled at the comment about your son forgetting to put his other sock on. One time when we were at a restaurant waiting a loooong time for my son @ 11-12 at time to come out of the bathroom so we could leave, I went and checked on on him and he was playing in the water and his  excuse was "Oh I forgot" I said forgot what,  "Forgot to leave".  This from a child with IQ of 122.

Ah, the sock thing!!!  When I was a child that used to infurate my mother to no end.  She'd come in and I'd be putting my socks on, she'd tell me to put the other one on and leave.  Come back 10 minutes later and I'd be in the same position with the same sock half way on my foot.  As a child I didn't understand how she could NOT understand that I simply forgot I was putting on my socks because I was thinking about...  well, about whatever.

Now that my son does the same thing, it drives me wacky too!  I have a bit more empathy though, since I've been that kid (and sometimes am still that kid in a bigger body!).  I frequently call out from another room with things like, "what time is it?" (reward timer) or "what step are you on"?
