Has anyone tried Gaba Calm and Fish oil for ADHD children? And Valerian Root for kids for sleep?

I went to the nature store and found out about Gaba Calm and Fish oil for kids with ADHD and wanted to know if anyone else had tried these items and if they actually did work?  Also I read on the internet that valerian root for children works for sleep? I haven't tried any of these things yet, but wanted to know if anyone else had any success with these herbs and vitamins? Currently my daughter takes Concerta and Remeron for her ADHD, depression, and the Remeron is supposed to help her sleep, but it doesn't.

  • My daughter is on Adderall XR and Adderall and Clonidine. The clonidine helps her sleep and then melatonin which I bought at walmart  also helps her sleep alittle better. My daughter is ADHD and it is not fun at all. I have tried all kinds of meds she is 61/2 yrs old and we started meds at around 4 or so. I am here if you would like to talk.

  • Hi there, i am intrigued by what you think of adderall. we tried it on our daughter and it seemed to make things much worse. we also give our daughter fish oil and melatonin, but honestly I have been afraid to try any other prescribed medications.

  • The fish oil will help control mood swings, but I havn't heard anything about it helping with sleep. Valerian Root is not safe to use if your daughter is already on medication.

My daughter is on clonidine for sleep. We tried melatonin and other natural sleep aids, but they made her night terrors worse. She was waking up 3-5 times a night, and only sleeping 5-6 hours a night. The clonidine helps her sleep more through the night. It also helps with her anxiety through out the day.

  • Just a note on the fish oil.  My son tried it and said he was tasting fish all day.  It was suggested to me that  I freeze it - seems to work :)

  • L- Glutamine is an amino acid that boosts your Gabba nerotransmitter. This nerotransmitter has to do with anxiety, fears etc. So my son has anxiety and l- glutamine and gabba have helped.  When my son was on fish oils his eye contact was awesome. That is all It really did. Valerian root will relax your body but not your mind. (  I don"t like it ) and it has an awful smell) I wouldn't use it if your child is on meds.  My son isn't on meds but we use at night-  warm milk , camamille tea, melatonin or sometimes passionflower/ catnip tea. Consult your doctor with whatever you choose.

  • I started my son on folic acid, omega 3,6,9, and a multi vitamin about 2 months ago and I can definitely see a difference. I have never heard of the other stuff. I'm looking into OPC-3 its got some good reviews.

  • That's so weird... I take fish oil myself with Omega 3's and I don't taste fish all day. Hhmm... maybe I don't have the "good kind"?? lol

Now that I've seen people talking about this, I'm going to invest in a pharm. grade for myself and my son. I'm very curious about this now! Thanks to everyone that has posted about fish oil!

This is a story about how the brains of kids with ADHD mature slower. It's trying to explain why some kids "grow out of it" by the time they are in the late teens/early twenties, but I think it also explains why the fish oils are effective. I'm taking the fish oils because I am TTC, and I was told it would help brain development for the fetus, so I decided that I'd give it to DS also and see if it did any good.
