I am making my husband a dalek (alien from Doctor Who) cake for his birthday. I have bars of white chocolate that I want to use as the base on the cake instead of icing the whole thing. Icing will be used as detail work only. Is there any special way I need to do it? I know I would have to let the cake cool completely but that's it...

I'm guessing you're referring to a ganache.  Here is a link to a recipe for white chocolate ganache.  Also, although the recipe does not use the actual term, it requires setting up a double boiler.  Here is a better explanation about how to do that.
