When looking at all the name rankings, like the SSA names database, what is the popularity cut-off for how popular a name can be before you won't use it?
We are having such a hard time with naming our little girl due in June. Our current DDs name is listed in the 750s, and my personal cuttoff is the 500s, but for for this little girl we just can't think of anything we like except names like Paige (#77), Brooke (#99), and Liana #526 (but I have discovered it is just a shortened version of Eliana #169).
Our DD wants to name her Scarlet, after a cartoon character, which is #413 and #114 (with two Ts).
So frustrating!
I am only comfortable with very rare names. Extremely rare is my preference.
Extremely rare but not made up. I like names with a real history and meaning.
For me it is more about how quickly it is moving up the charts. If it is moving quickly it can becoem trendy. My daughter's name is a classic that is high (and popular), but it is slower moving so I feel it eill remain mare classic.
The other name we were considering was moving up the charts faster and I feel is more trendy. Audrey vs. Chloe (Now others may argue with me).
I think Liana and Eliana are more af a trend name, than say Paige or Brooke. Brooke to me though has a more dated naound to me, personally I think of it as a name given to in the 70's ans 80's (Brooke Sheilds) Paige has been hanging around for a while and is less trendy. Scarlet, I think is hitting a trend stride. (Thank To Scarlet Johanson)
So the question is, why is it you don't like the higher numbers? Is it because the seem trendy, like a Jennifer? or do you want it to be uncommon, because you like uncommon names?
In the end if you need to love the name ans think it wil fit your child.
One kid has a high ranking name #52 for 2010 and the other is not ranked in the top 1000.
Quoting TashaLav:how do you fine out the rank? lol

It is more that I don't want it to be too popular. My name is Tonya and my husband's is Ryan, and we both went to school with about 3 other kids that shared our names, and I would like to avoid that to the greatest extend possible.
I also look at how fast it is moving up, like you said, because some names are low now but by the time she reaches school age may be a lot higher. My daughter's name has been moving steadily up the charts for the past several years.
Thanks! I always wanted to know! I always just have to look at the books and then they dont even have ds spelling :(
