Remember you can show love and effection every day of the year too. :-)
Assalamu Alaykom, sister, And welcome to the peace of Islam, I know that this might be very difficult, but I totally agree with the previous post, we are allowed to only celebrate our two feasts, Fitr and Adha. And yes, Valentine day is originally a celebration for a Saint. I know this is a sort of struggle, but remember that prophet (PBUH) said whoever forgoes something for the Sake of Allah, Allah will reward him with something much better than the thing he let go of. I guess it is better to keep your child home because at his young age he will certainly want to participate in all the gift-giving and celebrations. IF you try to explain things for him, he will only regard Islam as a source of deprivation, but when his a little older, about say six or seven years old, you can explain to him. He would be more willing to accept. BTW, you can plan a surprise celebration at your home with cakes, hearts and may be a gift for your husband at a very regular time, and I guess it really becomes much more meaningful, becaue you'd be doing it to really express your affection, not because everyone else is doing it, or that it would be embarrassing not to do it.
