Assalamu alaikum dear sisters.
a baby shower is not really like a birthday or anniversary..etc. because you are not marking one day of the year with celebration every year on a regular basis. a baby shower is kind of preparation for the coming of the baby.. and the date set for that has no baring .. like my sister commented. if all activities in the shower are halal activities then insha' Allah there is no harm in having it done..
personally. I prefer to have the shower AFTER the baby comes.. my father is an OB/GYN. my husband is a pediatrician. and so I have seen way too many tragedies in my life.. I'm sorry. not trying to scare any one or be a downer. but I prefer to celebrate the baby once the baby comes.. saves the parents the agony of looking at all the reminders or having to return things should God forbid something would happen to the baby..
when my friends invite me to a baby shower, I bring the gift to the mother. like a nice purse, or perfume ( if I know she will not use it outside) . then after the baby comes, I visit her at the hospital, or at the Aqeeqah and bring the gift for the baby. but that is a personal choice..
I had three children in this country, and I've had people wanting to throw me showers. but I asked them to hold off till both the baby and me come out safely from the hospital :)
like I said, it is purely my opinion. the opinion of the scholars? if it is customary in your community and there are no haram activities.. then there is nothing against having it..
congratulations on your baby.. may you have a healthy pregnancy, a safe delivery , and a healthy baby that will be a joy and grow to be a pious Mu'min
Love and salaam (peace)
