If I am not mistaken, and if I am sisters please correct me it all has to do with the fact that Sunnis and Shias disagreed on who should lead after Prophet Muhammad pbuh died. Shia believe that leadership should have been passed to a relative of his and Sunni's believed the best suitable candidate should be elected, and that is what happened. As Sunni Muslims, as I believe we all are, we follow hadith which is the teachings of the prophet and Shia's do not.

I belive this is the general basis for why they split originally.

I do know (also correct me if I'm wrong) that some Shia will celebrate/remember  during (I think) the Day of Arafat Ali and his sons' deaths, often times beating themselves and wailing.  Also I have heard that some in fact do not believe that Prophet Muhammad (saws) was supposed to be our prophet, but that the angel Jibril came to him by mistake, and was supposed to go to Ali.  (which I can't fathom- how could Allah's angel make a mistake like this?)

I, too, have asked about the many differences.  I do know that one Sunni sister would not pray behind one of our youth during our Summer Program (although he was old enough to lead) because he is Shia.  I don't know an actual ruling on this, though my husband says he thinks that if there is a Sunni who can lead (and you are Sunni) that you should follow them first.

Shia do not take the ahadith from Abu Bakr or Aisha may Allah be pleased with them both. They have their own ahadith from my understanding.

I think if you search this group, you will find a thread about this topic. Insha'Allah I will see if I can find it and bump it and link it for you.
