Assalamu alaikum sisters,
I am still reading that book about the angels.. and the new thing I learned, subhana Allah ( All praise be to Allah)  has to do with the writing Angels. . we all know that each person has two appointed angels over us, one on our right recording our good deeds, and one on our left recording the bad deeds.

Allah the exalted says:

"But verily, over you [are appointed angels in charge of mankind] to watch you (10) Kiraaman [ Honorable] Kaatibeen [ Writing down your deeds] (11) They know all you do(12)     Quran 82: 10-12

" one sitting on the right  and one on the left"  Quran 50:17

what I learned today was that : they write EVERYTHING.

ibn Abbaas said " everything you say, good or bad is written down. even when  a person says, "I ate", " I drank..." I went ","I cam", " I saw..... and then every Thursday, all that a person did or said is examined. and whatever is good or bad is recorded and the rest is erased,by the order of Allah. this is what is referred to in the Aaya where Allah ( almighty , the exalted) says

"Allah blots out what he wills and confirms ( what he wills) and with him is the Mother of the book [ Al-lawhu al-mahfooth] ( Umm al-kitaab)"
Quran 13:39

ibn katheer  mentioned that Imaam Ahmad used to moan when he was sick, then he heard that Taawoos said " everything is written down even a person's moans" after that Ahmad Never moaned until he died, may Allah have mercy on him.. (masha' Allah)

subhaana Allah.
we all have to watch what we say. .. because on the day of judgement , weare the ones that are going to read our book .

bismillahi arrahmaan arraheem : Allah the exalted says:

" And we have fastened every man's deeds to his neck, and on the day of Resurrection, we shall bring out for him a book which he will find wide open.(13) [It will be said to him] Read your book. you are sufficient as a reckoner against yourself this Day" "  Quran 17:13-14

I highly recommend this book; it is called : the world of the noble Angles:in the light of the Quran and Sunnah. by  Umar S. Al-Ashqar

insha' Allah , we will dedicate a separate thread to the study of the Angels in Islam.

I leave you all in Allah's care,
love and salaamWink

ISBN: 9960672751
Author: Umar S. al-Ashqar
Publisher: International Islamic Publishing House (IIPH) 2003
Pages: 128 Binding: Hardcover

heres a copy and paste of the overview

Description from the publisher:

From the moment an individual is conceived in his mother’s womb, until his death and beyond, angels play a part in human life. Angels bring forth the soul of the dying and they bring comfort or inflict torment in the grave. An angel will sound the Trumpet on the Last Day, and angels will be present on the Day of Judgment until they accompany people to their ultimate destination in Paradise or Hell.

Almost all human cultures, ancient and modern, have some kind of belief about angels. The pre-Islamic Arabs believed them to be daughters of the Almighty. Some philosophers thought that angels were the stars in the sky. In modern times, there has been a resurgence of interest in angels, and they feature prominently in movies and other forms of popular western culture. But these myths have no role to play in the belief of the Muslim.

Our beliefs are based on the teachings of the Qur’an and Sunnah, which tell us all we need to know about the reality of the unseen, including the world of the angels. In this book, Dr. Umar S. al-Ashqar draws on the sources of Islam to give us a comprehensive picture of who the angels are, their role in the universe and their interaction with mankind in this world and the next.

Graceandlilly        I am going to take a guess . I am not sure but I say that is because it is the day before our Holy day.  Friday is our day to go to the mosque. Were as you go on Sunday.  The weekend in Saudi Arabia  is Thursday and Friday. Everyone goes back to work on Saturday.

wa'alaykum asalam rahmatullah wa barakatuh there is actually a hadith that your good and bad deeds are brought to Allah on Monday and Thursdays

Heres the Haddith from sahih muslim

Book 032, Number 6224:

Abu Huraim reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying The deeds of people would be presented every week on two days, viz. Monday and Thursday, and every believing servant would be granted pardon except the one in whose (heart) there is rancour against his brother and it would he said: Leave them and put them off until they are turned to reconciliation

assalamu alaikum sisters,
and thank you ,graceandlilly for your question
and thank you practicingislam for a wonderful answer.

it is a known and established fact in Islam that certain days of the week, or of the month, and even certain months of the year,. have special significance. and the prophet Muhammad peace be upon him encouraged us to take advantage of such significance.
for example, Ramadan is a month when all good deeds are multiplied in reward. so we are encouraged to do more and more good deeds during Ramadan.

Fridayis our Holy day.it is the day that God sat on his throne after he finished the creation of Heaven and Earth.
so we are encouraged to do certain things on that day, like read Surat al-kahf before the service and prayer. to attend the prayer at the mosque. ...etc.

the second half of the month of Sha'baan has significance,
the first six days of Shawwal ( all are name of lunar months in Arabic )
the first half of the month  of thul-hijja( when pilgrimage falls, and the festival of sacrifice ~ Eid al-Adha)
the three middle days in every lunar have significance....etc.

and in the week. it is reported that the deeds are submittedto Allah ( God ) on Mondays and Thursdays.. and that is why we are encouraged to fast those days..

you have to know though that this does not mean that God does not know our deeds .. or that he needs to be updated by the angels .. no, for he is all knowing, the exalted almighty.  it is more as a reminder for the believers to try and stay away from sin. and to try and repent.

Allah the exalted is more honorable and sublime than the example I am to use.. so may He forgive me if I misspeak, but  may be the idea would be more clear through this example... a  teacher has no use for your grades..  and  she already knows how well or bad you will do. but the tests she gives you , make you want to work harder. because those grades are a constant reminder of your efforts... and every time you know you have a test coming,. or your grades are going to your parents.. you will want to work harder...
it might be a lame example.Embarassed but it is the only one I could think of right now , forgive me.

well, I found  a fatwa (a ruling) by a renowned Muslim scholar that can explain this concept far better than I attempted to do..  I will post it following this post.

Thank you again  graceandlilly, for always bringing up good questions,  and topics of discussion and for having the open mindedness to hear our explanations, instead of judging our faith or forming your own ideas.. and through your questions, we are all benefiting insha' Allah ( God willing)  you  and the rest of the non Muslim sisters are truly an asset to this group.

I leave you all in Peace ( salaam)Wink

Here is the fatwa,

Question

Dear scholars, as-Salamu `alaykum. Is it right that people’s deeds ascend to Heaven on Monday and Thursday? Jazakum Allah khayran.

Answer

Answer:

Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dear brother in Islam, we would like to thank you for the great confidence you place in us, and we implore Allah Almighty to help us serve His cause and render our work for His sake.

It is well established that people’s deeds are submitted to Almighty Allah. This serves to encourage people to obey the commandments of Almighty Allah and to avoid sinning. In addition, this is a preliminary step towards bringing people to account for their deeds on the Day of Judgment.

In his response to your question, Dr. `Ugail Jasim An-Nashmi, professor of Shari`ah at the University of Kuwait, states the following:

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is reported to have said, “Deeds are submitted (to Almighty Allah) on Monday and Thursday, and I would like that my deeds are submitted while I am fasting” (Reported by At-Tirmidhi). This hadith indicates that fasting on Monday and Thursday is recommendable.

The angels’ presenting people’s deeds to Almighty Allah on these days is an organizational matter the wisdom of which only Almighty Allah knows. Of course, He Almighty knows everything in the universe before the angels record and submit it to Him.

There is another hadith to the effect that people’s deeds are presented to Almighty Allah in the month of Sha`ban and that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would fast almost all or most of this month so that his deeds would be presented while he was fasting. Thus, one may wonder what is the relation between submitting deeds to Almighty Allah in the month of Sha`ban and submitting them twice a week on Monday and Thursday.

The reason may be that the purpose of submitting people’s deeds to Almighty Allah twice a week is not to inform Him Most High of these deeds, for He Almighty does not need to be told of what He Almighty already knows. But it may be, rather, to encourage people to obey His commandments and warn them against sinful deeds. It is a way of telling people that they are watched closely. It is analogous to students’ taking regular exams during the school year, so that they may not get lazy, until the final exam comes when they do their best to pass.

Hence, we may view the presentation of people’s deeds to Almighty Allah twice a week as a preparation for the annual presentation in the month of Sha`ban and then for the final reckoning on the Day of Judgment when all people will be brought to account for their deeds and know the results of what they did in their worldly life.

So let’s depend on Almighty Allah, heart and soul, vie to obey Him voluntarily, seek His Forgiveness and to repent to Him as soon as possible, so that our faces will be lit when we are brought to judgment before Him Most High.

Thanks, ladies for your wonderfully informative answers, and your compliments.  Thank you, especially, Sister Proud, for all the time and concern you put into researching and finding answers.   May God's blessings be with you all.

We, too, have our special and holy days in Christianity.  In some ways, it seems that Ramadan and Lent share similarities, as both being seasons of fasting, prayer, and repentance.

How do the lunar Arabic months correspond with our calendar months, January, February, etc?   Many of my kids Muslim friends at the University flew back home to Saudi Arabia over the Christmas/Winter break to spend time with their families and celebrate (I think) The festival of sacrifice or Eid al-Adha.  As I understand it, this is in honor of Abraham and the sacrifice he was willing to make?

Do you feel that the record of your deeds submitted to Allah on Mondays and Thursdays would also include things left undone....such as times when you had opportunities to do or say something to bless and help another person, but neglected to do so?  What we as Christians would call "sins of omission"?

One thing we as Christians and you as Muslims certainly do agree on is that God is all-knowing.  He knows all of our deeds, all of our thoughts, and whether the motives behind them are pure and honest or not.
