Ok, I was asked by a friend to make a cake for the Navy.  Its for a ball they are having.  It is supposed to feed 200 to 250 people.  Thats alot of people! lol.  But I was wondering how big it needs to be.  They want a single layer, but I can't fit that through my door easily and make it look good, so i was thinkin of just two layers, just stacked.  One layer in an octogon shape, the top layer a circle with the navy seal emblem on top.  I was wondering about the sizes of those.  I was thinking about doing 4 12" squares on the bottom to make a big square, 24" by 24" double layered, then cut it into an octogon shape, then a 12" circle one on top of that.  Does that sound like it would be enough cake to feed that many people?  I looked up the wilton cake serving chart, and it said something around 344 servings, but thats without the corners being cut for the octogon shape.  I have read a few times that the wilton serving chart isn't exactly accurate.  Should i try to make this bigger than what I have planned, or does it sound accurate to you??  Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!  Also, does anyone know where i can get edible images printed?  I was gonna use that for the emblem on top of the 12" circle.  Thanks!!!

Serving charts are based on 2 layers totaling 4" high.  Party  servings are a little bigger than reception servings.

For a 4" high party cake, the size should be 2" x 1 1/2 .  So a 9x13 pan would yield 36 servings.

Now if its a 1 layer sheet cake, party servings should be 2"x3" yielding 16 servings and for receptions the same 1 layer sheet cake would be 2 x 2 yielding 24 servings.

Regarding the ediable images: Call around to your local grocery store bakeries or Ice Cream Stores like Carvel or Friendly's or any place that you know uses them. Though they don't advertise it, more and more of these stores will now print them for you at a reasonable cost.

I asked about images at a local WalMart and one of the ladies said she could print me just the image as long as it wasn't copywrited and was something I did myself. The lady behind her made sure to add that although they can print it they can't sell it unless its on a cake they made. So not all places will do it for you, and sometimes, it just depends on who is working when you go in. I would love to know how this comes out for you!! I'm excited to see it!!!

New cakes added all the time. Click my siggy to see them!
