Hot Topic (10/25): Do you believe the predictions for 2012?

The ancient peoples of Mesoamerica were of a vast interconnected empire, filled with rich art, education and destruction. The Maya were one of these tribes. Other than archaeological intrigue why are these people so studied? Their written language was based on pictographs, much like the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. Mayan culture was like most other native cultures.

The Maya had an understanding of mathematics and understood the value of zero long before its discovery in the Eastern parts of the world. Their understanding of numbers and astronomy gave us the Mayan calendars of the Long and Short Counts. So why does this calendar attract so much attention now? The Mayan calendar ends on the Gregorian calendar date of December 21, 2012, which most people believe is the total end of civilization, as we know it, while others believe it is simply a change of enlightenment in this current time. Many theories have sprung up about this end date, ranging from the laughable, to the religious, to the scientific.

There are actually three Mayan calendar systems, the 365-day Solar year, the 260-day Ritual year, and the 5,128 years of the World Time calendar. The Haab or Solar year was broken down into an 18 month plus five days cycle. 18 months of 20 days and the 5 soulless days which were thought to be of ill omen, kind of like 5 days of Friday the 13th. The Tzolkin (zol-KEEN) or Sacred Round was the 260-day ritual calendar was broken down by days, not months. This religious calendar was the basis on how the people, singly and collectively, went on with their day-to-day lives according to destiny.

August 11, 3.114 B.C. when the world began in, long count to Gregorian translation. This beginning date was reached by finding a point in future time (December 21 2012) and counting backwards, as theories go, which gives us a 5,126 year span.

What are your thoughts?

This is really interesting. I have always wondered about the Mayan Culture. My son was intrigued with his High School history class when they studied the Mayans. He was so interested and still is. We both wonder about 2012. And we both wonder about Nostradomus!

Do I believe it will happen? I guess I would say no. I am one of those types that I have to see it to believe it. So I guess I wait and wonder like the rest of the world.

An end to an age, or an end to this cycle of earth is not the same as an end to all things.

The Myans aslo were said to be knowledgable of time travel and reported of the future (past the time of the calendar) was gray and formless. Some people have used this to dictate that this date was an end to time. There is another way of viewing it as an age we as humans form through our actions and our level of spiritual awakening.

So many speak of the Myans but so few talk about the similar calendar in the Great Pyramid that ends on the same date.

Science states that leading up to this date will be a great change on the earth. The climate and weather can be agravated due to changes occuring here on earth. Pompey was destroyed by a volcano and many great civilizations were lost due to weather issues. So it may very well represent destruction but people survived that and such will probably survive this. Some will probably perish.

I really don't believe in it. I think when the world ends it will be us humans doing it. and I saw a show about Nostradamus and how he predicted everything that has happen. I don't believe that either. I just think he was a man writing dark poems.

I don't believe anything catastrophic is going to happen but I did see preveiws for a movie about 2012 and IT looks disastrous. My kind of movie!

"You won, alright? You came in and you killed them and you took their land. That's what conquering nations do. That's what Ceasar did. He's not going around saying 'I came, I conquered, I felt really bad about it'. The history of the world is not about making friends. You had better weapons and you massacred them. End of story."  Spike

Yes but, Nostradamus predicted 9/11, WWI, WWII, Hitler, Napolean being 2 of 3 antichrists, and even talked about 2012 in many of his quadrains.   He predicted a 3rd anti christ, who may be among us now, as very charming and convincing from a powerful nation.   There is more information on his prophecies on the History Channel.    It's very interesting to say the least.
