Ok this is just unsettling for me. 2 weeks ago I got a mailer from a car dealership asking to come trade in my car. They had the make and model of my car and address (obviously). I have never been to that dealership nor is my car even registered in this state. Last week my DH got a call at WORK from Carmax asking about the same car. Neither one of our vehicles is registered in this state (AL) so how the heck did they get this info? What bothers me the most is if they know this stuff, what else do they know and why/how is it so easily accessed?
"You won, alright? You came in and you killed them and you took their land. That's what conquering nations do. That's what Ceasar did. He's not going around saying 'I came, I conquered, I felt really bad about it'. The history of the world is not about making friends. You had better weapons and you massacred them. End of story." Yes that's a little disturbing, but one way is that one of them might for some reason drive by your place and get the license plate state and number then look up name from there, or after seeing the car there get the name of who lives there from other sources like Post Office. What I'm wondering is why they want your car so badly.

They either sell your info or give it to businesses that they think may interest you.
Everytime I get a speeding ticket I get all these lawyer offers in the mail to come and fight the ticket for me. I wondered how they got my info and found out that lawyers go up to the building that deals with tickets and they get your info and then send you mail.

I'm serious! That's the first thing I thought when I read this, and I just had 4 cups of coffee, so sorry if I offended to OP...I just thought it was a crazy thing to think.

This is hear say from a dealer but allegedly they can get all this information from the cash for clunckers site still. I cannot say for certain it is true.
This makes the most sense I suppose. It's just weird, I haven't taken my car anywhere near a dealership and it's in my name only.

IDK...maybe your car insurance record?

If your car is registered the information can be accessed. Our warrenty recently ran out on one of our cars. Almost every day we calls from different places that know our warrenty ran out, trying to sell us extended warrenty and most are calling from India lol. Ever seen those cars in malls that you sign up to win. Well if you have ever done anything like this you need to read the fine print. They do sell your information and your generally agreeing to it by filling out the info. Alot of times when you are surfing and get pop ups they get your information that way too.
I think that stuff is creepy. I saw this thing once where a guy tried to 'disappear' in America, but he got tracked down, anyway. So much for anonymity. I also got one of those photo speeding tickets in the mail once for going 28 in a 20 MPH zone. I was so creeped out by it. But I guess maybe I'm paranoid. I don't like that you can see my house from Google Earth, either.
