US-Mexico groups urges new US assault weapons ban

MEXICO CITY — The United States should reinstate a Clinton-era ban on assault weapons to prevent such guns from reaching Mexican drug cartels, former officials from both countries said in a report released Tuesday.

The group, which includes two former U.S. ambassadors to Mexico, also said the U.S. should do more to stop the smuggling of firearms and ammunition into Mexico by stepping up investigations of gun dealers and more strictly regulating gun shows.

The Binational Task Force on the United States-Mexico Border listed the assault weapons ban as a step the U.S. should take immediately to improve security in both countries. The 10-year ban expired in 2004.

"Improving our efforts ... will weaken the drug cartels and disrupt their illegal activities, and make it easier ultimately to dismantle and destroy them," said Robert Bonner, co-chairman of the group and former head of both the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and Customs and Border Protection agency.

U.S. and Mexican officials say drug cartels frequently use assault rifles, which are banned in Mexico but easily purchased in the United States.

Mexican President Felipe Calderon launched a nationwide crackdown on drug cartels when he took office in December 2006. The offensive has been met with unprecedented violence, leaving more than 13,800 people dead.

During his run for office, President Barack Obama promised to push to reinstate the ban. He has since said he would rather enforce existing laws that make it illegal to send assault weapons across the border.

Do you think assault weapons should be banned in the U.S.?

Are you in favor of investigations of gun dealers and increased regulation of gun shows?

  • There are too many countries attempting to decide, interpret and manipulate laws in the US.  There are too many politicians and committees in the US willing to go right along with these claims and demands.  This "plan" will not stop the drug trade between the US and Mexico.

If this is supposed to be taken as factual, then someone needs to research the history of the drug trade between the US and Mexico PRIOR to and DURING the ban on assualt weapons. The "DRUG TRADE" hasn't truly changed in quantity or type per capita.  It's relatively the same.  This seems to be another way of making a case for adding restrictions in America.

NOW, before anyone would blast me, think about it, please.  "U.S. and Mexican officials say drug cartels frequently use assault rifles, which are banned in Mexico but easily purchased in the United States."  Easily purchased in mass quantities (or otherwise) in the US?!  Shouldn't we look at the drug trade between the US and Mexico during the previous ban on assault weapons, before we get behind this political freight train?  Where are the studies and reports that list how many and what type of weapons were found?

I'm with you on this one. I don't think it will work.

  • I AM ABSOLUTELY for a complete ban on all gun ownership. I do not see the point or the reason why it is necessary to try and arm every citizen in this country. So many needless deaths have resulted from private citizens owning guns.

So of course I am for the ban on assault weapons, whether or not they impact the drug trade. What is there on this earth that you would need to protect yourself from that would not die unless you had an assault weapon? Zombies that will not die?

  • NO!  I don't think we should ban assault weapons because once the government has that as a permenant ban then it will be easier for the government to step in and take away the rest of our gun rights.

  • As a responsible gun owner I wish to retain the right to keep them. Have walked down the Governments "Yellow Brick Road"   And thats all I have to say about that.  :)

  • No there shoul be no bans on any guns.

I read an article a few months ago with information from the ATF that said the guns used in mexican crimes are NOT coming from the US.  They are using guns that are illegal for citizens to buy here.  So these kind of articles are just tactics to make people think that if we were to ban guns we would become safer.

    That is not the case.

Actually i do not think anyone is unamerican or unpatritoic if they do not like guns or hate guns.  That is just the way they feel.  And if someone is uncomfortable with them then they should not have one around.

The issue I have is that if you are not fond of them then do not buy one but do not try to keep others from buying them and ask for stronger rules on it.

  • No private citizen needs to own an assault weapon.

It should be more difficult to purchase guns at shows.  There needs to be a thorough background check any time someone buys a gun.  So sorry if it inconveniences them and they have to wait a day or so, but my safety is just as important as their timetable for getting their gun.
