News: 10 year old girl tasered for resisting bedtime?

The local police chief in Ozark, Arkansas is standing behind one of his officers who tasered a 10-year-old girl who was refusing to go to bed.
The bizarre story is laid out in a police incident report obtained by website The Smoking Gun.
Officer Dustin Bradshaw was called to the home by a woman complaining that her daughter was being unruly and refusing to go to sleep. Bradshaw wrote that when he arrived at the home, he found Kiara Medlock “balled up in (sic) the floor crying and screaming.”
After watching her mother attempt to get Kiara into the bathtub with little success, Bradshaw took the girl into the living room and threatened her with jail. That didn’t settle things down. At some point, Bradshaw claims Kiara’s mother told him to “taser her if I needed to.”
Bradshaw then tried to handcuff Kiara. But he couldn't manage that either.
To hear Bradshaw tell it, he was now in the midst of a full-on brawl on the living-room floor with Kiara, a Grade 5 student. The 65-pounder was "verbally combative ... struck me with her legs and feet in the groin," Bradshaw wrote.
That's when he reached for his holster and delivered a "very very (sic) brief drive stun to her back with my taser."
Unsurprisingly, Kiara's struggling stopped immediately. Bradshaw then cuffed her and carried her to his squad car, since she could no longer walk.
The incident hit the news when Kiara's father, Anthony Medlock, took exception. Medlock does not live with Kiara's mother.
"I want to know how the heck in God's green earth can they get away with this ... If you can't pick the kid up and take her to your car, handcuff her, then I don't think you need to be an officer," Medlock told local Ozark 40/29 news. He said his daughter has shown signs of emotional issues, but she "doesn't deserve to be treated like a dog."
The local police chief stood behind Bradshaw and his decision.
"He had no other choice. He had to get the child under control," said Ozark police Chief Jim Noggle.
No disciplinary action is pending against Bradshaw. However, the Associated Press has reported that the FBI has dispatched agents to Arkansas to investigate.
Medlock said he will attempt to gain sole custody of his daughter.
This police officer is untrained as I suppose probably many are...do they not teach them how to take down a combatant using restraint moves anymore? If properly trained anyone can take down almost anyone else without harming the person but especially a child.

But why take down a 10 year old girl in her own home for throwing a temper tantrum in the first place?
An all out tempertantrum could pose a danger to the child and others involved. It can be a very violent experience if you have not seen a full blown one by a child this age. They can break stuff and injury adults and/or cause injury to themself by the fit of rage. Many are also very strong for their size when like this. He also escalated the problem though, but then perhaps he was also not taught how to control a violitile situation.

He should never have been called in there, nor should he have agreed to engage. A 10 year old (65 pound) child having a temper tantrum and not hurting anyone (accdg to the article) is a parenting issue. The police officer should not have gotten involved at all.
Accdg to the article:
he found Kiara Medlock “balled up in (sic) the floor crying and screaming.”
He proceeded to watch Mom escalate the problem by forcing the child into the bathtub. It sounds to me like Mom was the one who needed to be de-escalated.

Well I wasn't there but I agree he should not have been called. A child can go from rage and hitting to balled in the floor then back to rage and hitting. There are just things we are not being told about the situation but a taser was not a good idea.

I totally agree with this. I also believe that this cop should lose his badge for forever for using a taser on a small child throwing a tantrum.

I would love to see tasers replace guns for all law enforcement, BUT these idiots need to learn when to use the damn things. IMO I think a taser should only be used in situations in which you would have used a gun. Tasers can be dangerous and can have fatal side effects. We have heard too many stories of Police using tasers like billy clubs which should not be how they are used. Obviously you're not going to shoot a friggin 10 year old for a temper tantrum. I agree with a PP that a full blown temper tantrum can get out of hand and a parent might need some assistance before someone gets seriously injured, but a taser. Horrible. Absolutely unnecessary.

Rise up this morning, smile at the rising sun; Three little birds, pitch by my doorstep; Singing sweet songs, a melody pure and true; Singing, this is my message to you-ou-ou; Singing Don't worry, about a thing; Cause every little thing is gonna be alright.
But do you realize how out of control your household would already have to be in order to need a police officer to help you with your 10 year old's temper tantrum? (which it only said that the child was sitting on the floor and screaming). Talk about engaging in power struggles!
(btw I do agree with your statement that tasers should be only used in potentially lethal situations)

I don't know if I agree with the tasers completely replacing guns. They are a great tool and should be used as much as possible. However....if I were staring down the barrel of a gun I sure as hell wouldn't be reaching for my taser....I'd be reaching for the biggest gun within reach!
