Obama Nominates Pesticide Executive to Be Chief Agricultural Negotiator in the Office of the US Trade Representative

Wheat-web

President Obama’s nominee for the Chief Agricultural Negotiator in the office of the US Trade Representative, Islam Siddiqui is currently a vice president at CropLife America, a coalition of the major industrial players in the pesticide industry, including Syngenta, Monsanto, and Dow Chemical. He was previously a lobbyist for CropLife and also served in the US Department of Agriculture under President Clinton and the California Department of Food and Agriculture. A coalition of over eighty environmental, family farm and consumer advocacy organizations have sent a letter to the Senate Finance Committee urging them to reject his nomination. from the article

"Our concerns are quite simple. Putting a pesticide pusher in charge of US agriculture, particularly in the Trade office, is bad government. It’s not what Obama promised us during his campaign trail. He did say no lobbyists in the White House. And we know that Islam Siddiqui is a former paid lobbyist for CropLife and is currently and has been for the last many years a senior executive at this association."

This is disappointing.

I wonder if Michelle objected since she planted the organic white house garden.

What a shame upon Obama.  So powerless.  Just a pretty puppet.  At least he is better looking than Bushy.

Well they upgraded the model. Pretty puppet indeed. Love that.

This is just one more example of how voting changes nothing and the players remain the same, including those who are behind the scenes.

These people are brazen and don't even try to hide their corruption and greed. Chemical company officials actually wrote a letter of protest regarding Michelle Obama's organic garden.

It's crazy- our upside down world.

Yes, I remember something about the Chem companies complaining.  When Michelle made the garden, they started the propaganda attack right away.  I read an article in the local paper written by some supposed independent researcher (surely someone who had funding from a company such as Monsanto) who explained "rationally" how organic gardening is irresponsible; one example of the way corporations have bought knowledge, the way they fund universities.

Well said Diospira; an upside down world of brazen corruption and greed indeed.  Every day I am reminded of the story of 'The Emporer's New Clothes."
