The baby bottle that heats itself up in 60 seconds

Award winning: The bottle warms to 32oC

When feeding a tiny baby from a bottle, the trick is to heat up the milk. And for parents too tired to do it, the trick could be the Yoomi.

The gadget, which has won innovation and research awards, heats a baby's feed bottle to the temperature of breast milk with just the touch of a button.

The milk is ready to use in 60 seconds after heating to around 32-34 degrees celsius.

According to the husband-and-wife inventors, solicitor Farah and engineer Jim Shaikh, the device was born out of desperation after the birth of their eldest boy Danial.

Their experiences of stumbling around the kitchen in the early hours heating milk in the microwave or begging waiters for hot water when out to warm the bottle in, mirror those of millions of other couples.

Six years ago, Dr Shaikh, 43, first sketched the concept on a pub napkin. Later the product was road tested on the couple's second son Niall, now aged two.

The gadget that makes a difference is the sealed warmer unit that sits inside the bottle and beneath the teat.

Pressing a button on the side of the unit triggers heating of a solution contained within the warmer.

When the bottle is tipped, the cold milk flows out via channels on the outside of the warmer. By the time it reaches the teat, it is at the right temperature.

The warmer will stay at the same temperature for up to an hour and can be recharged around 100 times.

Dr Shaikh said the device works on a similar principle to hand warmers using gel packs.

How It works.jpg

'The button activates the process that turns the non-toxic solution from liquid to solid, during which it gives off heat. It can be recharged after use by immersion in boiling water or a steam steriliser.'

He added: 'It's been a long journey but the most thrilling moment was receiving our first order from a major High Street retailer.'

Clare Byam-Cook, former nurse and midwife and independent breast feeding counsellor, said the safety and convenience of the device will make life simpler for parents and baby.

Drinking cold milk is not ideal, she said, because very young infants may be deterred from feeding when milk is too cool.

She said: 'The great thing about Yoomi is that mothers can put breast or formula milk into the bottle and know that it will be heated to the perfect temperature that is safe for their baby.

The Yoomi bottle and feeder is £22, plus a pack of two teats for £4.50, from John Lewis.

I breastfed both of my boys so I really never had to deal with this issue, but the only thing I don't like about this concept is that the heating element is still present in the bottle while the baby eats.  I would be leery of that - otherwise, this sounds totally helpful.

Oh good. I wonder how long until there are going to be recalls due to scalding etc.

Want your milk the temperature of breastmilk? BREASTFEED.

I am a Canadian, breastfeeding (it IS best, there is nothing even close to that nutrition and bond), co sleeping, extended rear facing (if you don't rear face to the maximum of your seat, you're NOT doing all you can to protect your child), baby wearing, Non spanking (I want my kids to respect me, not fear me) ANTI- CIO, homemade baby food making, cloth diapering, organic (chemical free household!) recycling mama to TWO! My husband is my equal and best friend, not my master and I believe basic health care should be a human RIGHT, not a privilege.

Oh god, not this again.  Can't we leave the mommy wars out of at least one post about formula?  And you know, women who work and pump use bottles, too.

After two weeks of breastfeeding, my daughter ended up being formula fed. I got a bottle warmer from my baby shower and totally thought I was going to use it but I never did. My daughter prefers room temperature. And honestly, I think if you are formula feeding, the safest way to know that the bottle is the perfect temperature is by feeling it yourself. Why would you trust a machine to do YOUR job? Machines can malfunction at any time. If you do it yourself, you will KNOW that it's perfect.

I don't need to tell everyone what kind of mom I am - the smile on my daughter's face every day shows it all.

I'll never understand why people are so obsessed with making sure the breastmilk/formula is warm.  When I pumped, I kept it in the fridge, so I'd run it under some hot water for a minute and then just gave it to my daughter at room temp.  I know, that sounds horrible, but she didn't care either way.  She actually began to prefer it somewhat cool.  And when I had to switch to formula, I just mixed it with room temperature water.

This seems like it could easily be dangerous.  I would not want one and we have an infant in the house who "wants" his bottles warm.
