Thoughts? What would be appropriate charges against the "mother" in a case like this?
Newborn rescued from Garden City trash bin
A newborn girl was in a hospital today after she was found in a plastic bag placed in a trash bin in Garden City, police said.
The 7-pound, 4-ounce girl was discovered 5:30 p.m. Friday in the trash in a parking lot in the Cherry Hill and Middlebelt area, Garden City Police Deputy Chief Robert Muery said today. Four teenage girls walking past heard the infant’s cries and alerted an adult.
“She was sitting on top of the collection of garbage inside the dumpster,” Muery said.
The child was taken to Garden City Hospital and later transferred to another hospital, where she appeared to be thriving despite a low temperature.
She was fewer than 24 hours old when she was found. Detectives located the child’s mother after finding a receipt in the bag where the child had been placed, Muery said. .
The 22-year-old mother admitted she had given birth Thursday and had hidden the pregnancy from her family. She was taken to Garden City Hospital for treatment.
The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office will decide what if any charges will be pursued.
Muery said Michigan has a newborn safe delivery law that allows mothers to leave their newborns at a hospital, police or fire
I hope this lady goes to jail! They baby could've died! Some people are so f'omg stupid. Thank God that the Baby is ok and that the teenage girls found the baby! Koodos to them!
I am not sure but some jail time would be appropriate. Someone who discards a child has severe emotional problems or has had a sort of situational (i.e. unwanted pregnancy) temporary insanity (although I am not sure about the temporary aspect) due to her circumstances. I don't understand why with all of the laws that allow you to drop the baby that women still do this. I do, however, understand that many women simply do not know this information and panic causing them to think irrationally. Either way, she should get some jail time because no matter the reason she left a child to die. Mental help is obviously in order.
Immediate (forced if need be) sterilization. If she did it once, she'll do it again.

Hummm..........I don't know.It sounds like the girl was scared and confused some.I do think that something should be done to her because her town has a safe heaven law.She could have killed that baby. They should put the baby up for adoption.Maybe probation for the birth mother. It's sad.
What she said :).

How do you know she will do it again.
Justice in Nassau Says Landlord May Evict Abortion Clinic - New York Times
A State Supreme Court justice ruled today that a landlord could evict a Garden City abortion clinic because anti-abortion protests posed a danger to other tenants in the building. In a five-page ruling that never mentions the word abortion, Justice John DiNoto cited 17 incidents at the three-story building at 1103 Stewart Avenue that were "directly related" to the clinic, including gunshots, assaults on employees and a threatening note posted in January, stating: "Danger. This is awar zone. People are being killed here, like in Boston. You risk injury or death if you are caught near these ...
25 Arrested in Abortion Protest
Police arrested 23 antiabortion protesters, including two children, outside a women's clinic in North Hollywood today during a Memorial Day weekend rally, officials said. Two abortion rights activists, among those staging a rally in opposition to the protestors, were also arrested.
The arrests were made by mounted police and officers in riot gear under a Los Angeles City law enacted a week ago that bars disruptive protests within 50 feet of a clinic, its parking lot or buildings and walkways leading to the facility.
It just amazes me how some women in this group scream guilty without knowing all the facts. We have no idea about the situation. Thank goodness the child was found. But dont you think perhaps there may be extenuating circumstances when someone leaves a newborn baby in the trash?
