BEIJING, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Agriculture has called for intensified monitoring and investigation of A/H1N1 flu in animals after two samples from sick dogs were tested positive for the virus.

The veterinary clinic of College of Veterinary Medicine at the China Agricultural University reported Wednesday that two out of 52 samples from sick dogs were tested positive for A/H1N1 flu virus, the ministry said late Friday.

Analysis of genetic composition found the virus detected in the samples and those found on human A/H1N1 flu cases were 99 percent homologous, it said.

The ministry urged local authorities to further enhance prevention and control, intensify monitoring and investigation in animal cases of A/H1N1 flu and closely watch the virus mutation situation in animals.

I wonder if this means that the virus can travel between the two species. Thats a scary thought.

Yes. It has infected several pg farms, a turkey farm, a couple cats out west, killed some pet ferrets and now has infected dogs. It seems like this virus mutates very easily. Eastern Europe is having a big problem with being hit with a mutated form similar to the 1918 strain. It's unclear how easily the new mutation spreads. There is also a tamiflu resistant strain that health officials are finding more around the world. There was one case in France where a patient was infected with a strain that was both tamiflu resistant and infected the lungs deeply.

Not a true story. Dogs don't get it. The influenza virus infecting dogs is the H3N8.

Ok. But the cat one was still H1N1, right?

ETA: Where did you find out it was H3N8?

Ok. I doubled check and I'm pretty sure these dogs got H1N1. It's from a newspaper article out of China. I did find info about H3N8 but I'm sure Chinese health officials could tell the difference. H1N1 is suppose to be spread to cats yet there was a cat that died from it in the US. There have been several documented cases of it spreading to cats. There have also been a couple cases where people have gotten it twice and didn't have compromised immune systems. The H1N1 virus isn't following the normal rules.

I work with dogs, had to learn about it. I did hear about that cat...old cat, indoor cat, caught it from it's owner. Also heard that people can't catch it from their pets, but pets can catch it from their human.

The news article about the dogs catching H1N1 just came out in the last 24 hours.

just because you work with dogs and had to learn about it, doesn't stop this story from being true. you can learn all there is to know and life/science will still break "rules".

My answer was to her question about where I learned about it. That's where I learned about it. Where I work, and what I do.

H1N1 is not a new virus. It was out in the 70's.
