Left or Right

When you use those terms do you know the history behind them and what they really mean?

In politics, left-wing, leftist and the Left generally imply support for social change with a view towards creating a more egalitarian society. The term Left was coined during the French Revolution, referring to the seating arrangement in parliament; those who sat on the left generally supported the radical changes of the revolution, including the creation of a republic and secularization. The concept of a political Left became more prominent after the June Days Uprising of 1848.

The term was applied to a number of revolutionary movements in Europe, especially socialism, anarchism and communism. The term is also used to describe social democracy and social liberalism. The Left-libertarian Roderick Long summarises left-wing politics as "concerns for worker empowerment, worry about plutocracy, concerns about feminism and various kinds of social equality.

In politics, right-wing, rightist and the Right generally imply support for preserving traditional social orders with hierarchal or private control of wealth. The term Right was coined during the French Revolution, referring to seating arrangements in parliament; those who sat on the right supported preserving the institutions of the Ancien Régime (the monarchy, the aristocracy and the established church).

The concept of a political Right became more prominent after the second restoration of the French monarchy in 1815 with the Ultra-royalists. Today the term the Right is primarily used to refer to political groups that have a historical connection with the traditional Right, including conservatives, reactionaries, monarchists, aristocrats and theocrats. The term is also used to describe those who support free market capitalism and some forms of nationalism.

If a person has an opinion must it always be either one or the other?

Are both of these equally right or equally wrong?

Has the lines between the two blurred?

Did you know during the history of the United States they have used these word to classify who is an enemy of the state depending on what the situation was and who is in office?

An example would be post WWII when a person was classified as a leftist they were considered a communist and deemed a possible threat to the state, thus closely watched by the FBI.

I don't know about anyone else but I am not a communist nor do I believe in preservation of the social order and blue blood hierarchy.

Left or right makes no difference to me.

I am right wing conservative. I believe we need to stick with the Constitution as it was written and weath should be privately controlled by those who earned it. Just because someone makes more than someone else doesn't mean they should be taxed more. Taxes should be based on consumption.

When you go to the grocery store would it make sense for you to pay less for your groceries than Bill Gates because he makes more money than you? No so why should he pay more taxes.

So you believe there should be no income taxes? Since that was the way the Constitution was originally written.

I would say I'm def. a lefty, but that doesn't mean 'communist' anymore. That might be extreme leftism.

Right, I think perhaps we have moved onto the socialist part of that address.

I never have understood why people think that the rich pay so little?  Why should they have to pay someones elses way? Not all but most of the people griping about it are the lazy ones that think everything should be given to them anyway...I have never gotten that...I think the rich pay their fair share so why should they also have to pay everyone elses way too? *shakes head*
