What are your thoughts on homeschooling?
Are you a mom who homeschools? Do you think it's "weird?"
Would you ever homeschool?
Should homeschooling parents be required to have a college degree?

Homeschooling is every parents RIGHT.
We should never take rights away from the people.
Or limit them....unreasonably. (This answers the last question.)
I think that homeschooled children have the potential to become more educated than any child in school.
Also I realize that it is not an option for all people, single parents, anxious parents, etc.
But it is normal, and has the potential to trump an institutional education.
I have homeschooled my children from birth, and will continue to do so.
Weird? No.
Unusual, not even - at least not any more.
Most ppl are not knowledgeable about homeschooling, not enough to really form an informed opinion. I know I was not.
I thought the only ppl who homeschooled were the uber-religious or hippy freak types.
I thought there was no way that I (and I have a degree in education) could give my daughter as many opportunities as she could get in public school.
I was wrong about all of it.
We would never go back to her being in brick/mortar public school.

Except for the degree...I agree with this........My child is learning so much more and happy....
What are your thoughts on homeschooling?
Well alot of people are doing it, it seems to be working for them.
Are you a mom who homeschools? Do you think it's "weird?"
No, I do not homeschool nor would I.
Would you ever homeschool?
I feel that I am not qaulified to teach my daughter. I do not have the patience. My daughter also enjoys going to school.
Should homeschooling parents be required to have a college degree?
I think that there are some parents who are not qaulified to teach there children. We wouldnt let someone without a degree be a teacher in public schools. I dont know I dont want to upset anyone here. I have seen people "homeschool" that had no business doing it. It takes a special parent to do this.
What are your thoughts on homeschooling? Can't say I spend time thinking about it....
Are you a mom who homeschools? My children are only 17 months old at the moment. Do you think it's "weird?" It's definitely different....
Would you ever homeschool? No way. I want my children to have friends...and social skills...and not be sheltered constantly.
Should homeschooling parents be required to have a college degree? I think they should have to prove they have some sort of qualification. Right now any old hillbilly outback redneck crackpot can homeschool their kids, and the problem with that is eventually those kids are going to end up out in the real world with the rest of us lol
I find it absolutely ridiculous that one would assume a child needs to go to regular school to have friends and social skills. You never met people at school that were completely socially inept and had no friends? I knew plenty! Ive also met many, many families who homeschool and their children have plenty of friends and are very socially competant. And when you think about it, other than your time spent in regular school, when in your life are you only socializing with people of your own age group? Once you move on past high school, you have to socialize with people of all different age groups on a dailly basis. Are people prepared for that, simply because they were socialized in high school?
My DD is 3 and we havent 100% decided on what to do for school. Im not pleased with the public schools in our small town, and there arent too many other options available to her. We will probably start out homeschool and contiue with that for as long as it is working.
Why does my Pre-Schooler ride Rear-Facing? Because she is not a minimum. She deserves more than that. If we get into an accident, I want to know that I have done everything in my power to protect her. Rear-Facing is endorsed by every car seat authority in the US. It is PROVEN to be safer. Why would I choose to take an unneccessary risk with the most precious gift that I have been given? PM me for more info!

No I don't think homeschooling is wierd at all- and as for the qualifications for the parents- isn't that the point of testing the children for benchmark progress? If the children are accomplishing the academic benchmarks then clearly the parent is doing just fine. If the child fails to reach academic proficiency for extended delayed periods then it should be looked into. But outside of that- homeschooling is a fine idea imo.

I don't find homeschooling 'weird' although there are definitely some 'weird' homeschoolers.
I personally would not homeschool, at least I'm 95% sure I wouldn't do it. I considered it for about 5 minutes one day and then realized it isn't something I have the capacity to manage especially since I will be returning to work soon (I hope!)

I think it has the potential to be "weird" if the parent is doing it to shelter the child from any views that differ from his/her own. Honestly, before joining CafeMom, where I learned that "normal" people home-school, too, I had a preconceived notion that the only people who home-school are the religious cults or the wacky "Wife Swap"-type families you see on TV. But now I understand there are many different reasons to do so. I'm sure some home-schooled children are receiving a better education than they might in school, but then I've also seen some home-schooling moms who can't string together a coherent sentence, and I worry for their children. I have a degree in education and have worked in educational publishing for a decade, and I wouldn't even home-school, so I'm not sure how it's successful for a parent with a high-school education.
I don't think it's weird at all. I wish I was homeschooled, that would have saved me from all the years of teasing and bullying I had to endure when I was growing up! I don't know however if I am capable of providing this for my daughter. I would definitely leave it open as an option though.
