Just watched a really interesting documentary of the first season (2004) of Afghan star, modeled after American Idol. It was very interesting. If the 2000 people who audtioned, only 3 were women. 2 of the women made the top 10, but one of them was voted off for moving too much on stage. During her final performance she all out danced and let her scarf fall from her head. After which she recieved death threats. Even her fellow contestants were shocked. The other girl made it to the final 3 and besides the singing, which under the taliban had been banned (along with everything but breathing really) she was very modest. However she was from an area where the Taliban still had a hold and recieved death threats from them. I just though this was very interesting. 1/3 of the country voted during that first season of Afghan Star. I thought this documentary was an interesting look at the peoples views. It focused on different regions and ethinic groups. It also showed a clip about Afghanistan in the 80s and if you are not aware of what Afghanistan was before the Taliban, lets just say I was shocked. There were even bad 80s mullets and bad 80s bands. The women looked like westerners, hair uncovered, ankles exposed. It was very interesting. I recommend checking it out. Its a great documentary. Heres a YouTube trailer.
