— A Broward circuit judge ordered a 14-year-old boy to be held in juvenile detention for 21 days while authorities investigate a charge he beat up his ex-girlfriend after they got off the school bus Tuesday morning.

A prosecutor said the boy hit D'Angelique Coby, 12, about 7:30 a.m., breaking her nose.

The girl was treated at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital and released.

The boy, who appeared before Circuit Judge Merrilee Ehrlich, is charged with aggravated battery. The Sun Sentinel is not naming him because he is charged as a juvenile.

The bus had stopped to let students off at McNicol Middle School in Hollywood when the boy punched the girl in the face several times, according to a police report. Students who said they witnessed the incident said it occurred just as the two got off the bus.

Both are students at the middle school at 1602 S. 27th Ave. and live in West Park, police said.

After the fight, the boy ran into a nearby neighborhood and was chased by the school resource officer, according to Police Lt. Scott Pardon. The officer called for help and police caught the teen, who admitted punching the girl, according to the report.

Police said it was not clear what the fight was about, but that it occurred after an argument on the bus.

The boy had been involved in a previous violent incident at the school, the report said.

In an interview with WSVN-Ch. 7, D'Angelique said the boy got upset when she told him she didn't "want to be with him anymore."

Eighth-grader Tarron Auguste, 14, who said he was a friend of the boy, said he saw D'Angelique yelling at the boy. Then the boy punched her once in the face, Auguste said.

"She dropped to the floor and started bleeding," Auguste said.

The boy's parents did not appear in court with him. They could not be reached to comment, despite visits to his home Tuesday afternoon.

A woman who answered the door at the apartment where D'Angelique lives said she was the girl's mother and that the girl was "doing fine; she's much better." She said D'Angelique did not want to talk.

D'Angelique could be seen inside, covering her nose with a cloth.

This causes me to wonder what kind of parents don't show up at court for their child.

Thoughts?
