Unsung Hero?

Have a read of the cable published on WikiLeaks, giving America's assessment of the role of Gordon Brown in staving off a repeat of a 1930s-like depression.

It is kind of a pity it wasn't made public at the time.  He didn't get nearly that much credit back in Britain, and he was kicked out at the next general election.

Two questions:

Do you agree with the economists that, in hind-sight, if governments around the world had not reacted to the economic crisis the way the did (bailouts for banks and large public spending), the odds were high that there would have been a 1930s-like depression?

Which single individual do you think is most responsible for saving the world from that fate?
