Builders bring 'Up' house to life in Utah

HERRIMAN -- Some Utah homebuilders have brought a piece of movie magic to reality in Herriman.

A home designed to look like the one from the movie "Up" is drawing a lot of attention -- even from the folks at Disney.

The house really stands out in this neighborhood, located at 13215 S. 5390 West in Herriman, painted with all the bright colors from the movie.

The home as seen in the movie 'Up.'

If you've seen "Up," you know the house plays a very key role in the film -- which is what grabbed the attention of the homebuilders. So they decided to build it, with a special vision in mind.

"The movie kind of captured the idea that a house is a place where you live and you grow up and you live your life," said builder Blair Bangerter. "We've tried to take this movie and bring it to life in a real home."

The house is still a work in progress, but it's getting close. With the outside of the home finished, it's already attracting dozens of tourists each day.

Bangerter and his team of subcontractors went to great lengths to make this replica as authentic as possible. The garden hose reel, the front door, the custom mailbox, even the weather vane are all recreated in full.

"Almost every detail is going to be found here," Bangerter said. "There was a little kid here the other day, and he said, 'Hey, there's no light above the front door,' and I said, 'The heck there isn't! How many times have you watched the movie?'"

The folks at Bangerter Homes got the project approved by Disney. Once finished, it will become part of the Salt Lake area Parade of Homes. On the weekends, builders even add balloons to create the full effect.

"They're pretty expensive because you have to put a whole bunch of them up," Bangerter said.

But not too many -- it is, after all, just a home. And that's what the builders want. Special project aside, they hope the end result will be fairly simple.

"We are kind of romanced with the idea that this is a house. Someone will live here, like they're supposed to." Bangerter said.

Crews are still finishing the inside. They will fill it with custom-made furniture as seen in the movie. They did take a few liberties, however, like adding some extra space and a basement.

The total space of the home is about 2,800-square feet. The builders hope to sell it at just under $400,000, which would just about allow them to break even on all the building costs.

Meet Utah's real-life 'Mater'
June 30th, 2011 @ 6:30pm
By Sam Penrod

GUNNISON -- Main Street in Gunnison, isn't exactly the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but it is where you will find the world's most popular movie star right now.

As "Cars 2" tops the box office, the star of Pixar's "Cars" sequel, is in front of the Casino Star Theatre. "It's Awesome" says one girl who stopped by to see him.

A boy adds, "He actually does look pretty real, I like it."

It's Tow Mater, better known as Mater, the star of the latest "Cars" movie. If you don't think it really is Mater, just look at the faces of the young kids who are showing up to see him.

With just 260 seats, The Casino Star Theatre in Gunnison rarely gets a new blockbuster when it's released, but last weekend was able to open with "Cars 2."

The theatre had no idea about the special guest.

"This showed up here the night before the movie was to open," said Diana Spencer of the Casino Star Theatre Foundation. "It had people climbing all over it, every kid in town."

Is "Cars 2" Pixar's first lemon?
"Cars 2" premiered over the weekend and kept Pixar tradition by hitting big at the boxoffice. The animated sequel pulled in nearly 110 million dollars worldwide. But there's a stark difference in this film and the rest of the Pixar catalog… "Cars 2" has been slammed by critics.

Lifelong Gunnison resident Seth Hendrickson brought the 1951 Dodge to life as Mater a few weeks ago. For decades, the old truck was parked in a lot full of weeds.

The owners, D&D Buick, told Hendrickson they didn't want it anymore and let him haul it off.

"I kind of noticed it right when that first 'Cars' movie was coming out," said Hendrickson, "and so I hauled it down to the farm and stored him and decided this was a good time to get him out, and make him look like that."

It didn't take much.

A mouth, some eyes and just a little bit of paint, and it was all done in a day's work.

Everything with Mater is pretty authentic, including the rust. And Mater was really a tow truck in Gunnison, serving the community in the 1950s and '60s.

"You get talking to the old guys in town and they all recognize him from the good old days," adds Hendrickson. And now it seems everyone wants to have their picture taken with this old tow truck that doesn't even run.

"You've got to tow Tow Mater," laughs Hendrickson. "We had to tow him here, but maybe next year we'll have him ready to run."

He's a big attraction in a small town that feels a lot like Radiator Springs.

That is SO cute.

The gas station down the street won some contest and was the Quickie Mart from The Simpsons for a while.
