South Carolina Teachers Lament Missing Federal Education Money.

WIS-TV Columbia, SC (8/17, Kearns) reports that even though the state did not qualify for $144 million in Federal education jobs stimulus funding, many South Carolina teachers are "having a hard time understanding why superintendent Mick Zais did not go after the" money. Teachers protesting in the state capital Monday said Zais should have found a way for the state to qualify.
Paper Praises Zais For Spurning Federal Money. The Florence (SC) Morning News (8/17) editorializes that Zais' decision to allow South Carolina's money to be redistributed to other states "will seem like foolishness to some. The feds' 'education jobs' bill would amount to roughly $2,000 per student." However, "the $10 billion education job windfall is exactly the sort of thing that's put us in this deficit/debt ceiling/downgrade sort of mess."
