Convicted Rapist/Elementary Schools

We just had a convicted rapist move into our neighborhood.  About three blocks from my house.  I'm not excited at all.  I looked his record up - he doesn't seem like a nice guy based on his past.  So - I also live about two blocks from an elementary school.  In my state the law is a convicted sex offended must live at least 1,000 feet from an school.

Really?  Just 1,000 feet?  I would have put it at at least 1 mile.  AT LEAST.  I didn't know I would be that off base.  That seems loose to me.

Thoughts?

Tennessee

§ 40-39-[2]11(a)-(b)

A sex offender cannot live within 1,000 feet of schools, childcare facilities, or the victim.

I live in the state of Tennessee, by the way.  I tried to copy and paste, but it didn't work.
