Need help - Dyslexia *UPDATE*

Does anyone have a child with dyslexia or have dyslexia themselves? How did it first present? I am just starting to worry that my oldest son might have it or something similar because he is always mixing up letters and numbers unless he REALLY concentrates on it. I have never researched dyslexia before so I am going to start that as soon as this posts. I am also emailing his teacher to ask her opinion too.

UPDATE - The teacher finally got back to me (the email slipped through her radar but just asked her about it on the class website and she got back to me). She has noticed it too. She isn't worried because when he copies stuff he copies it correctly. So it is just when he speaks that he gets it mixed up. She is going to keep an eye on it but that right now it seems normal. She even thanked me for being so active in his relationship.

Thanks for posting this! I've been wondering if it was normal or not that my first grader is constantly mixing up letters and numbers or writing them backwards.

Yeah my oldest son mixes up numbers like 47 and 74. And the thing is he knows his numbers. He can count them and if he concentrates he can write them properly. But when seeing them he mixes them up. He also mixes up his letters a lot too. I have been worried for a bit but thought it was just him learning the material. But he has it mastered except for this hiccup.

Truth, yes it is normal for young children to get numbers and letters reversed.

My brother and I both have it. My brother has to do with reading and mixing up the words and letters  He was in special ed classes. There are different things can help your child.  My brother had speical tinted paper and glasses. It wouId help the words, letters are numbers  when  reading. I  was also tested but mine was not server enough, mine was numbers.  I still have a hard time when reading numbers.  My husband has learned to when asking for phone numbers to repeat them back to me.

My daughter will do that with most double digit numbers. She also mixes up her b's and d's every single time. Hopefully she will grow out of it. Her teacher assured me it was quite normal at this age. I hope she is right.

Agree. Depending on what age they are but if they are still having issues around 3 and maybe even 2 grade you should start looking into testing.

I don't hav dyslexia but I'm a teacher. It is common to have those mix ups for a while. In fact most teachers don't test for LDs until around 3rd grade.

He is 5. And honestly you saying it was normal just reminded me I have textbooks about teaching children reading, which included signs of dyslexia I believe. I haven't used them in years and I guess that is why I forgot I have them. Now I'm off to search for them.

It's pretty normal at that age to reverse letters numbers.
